Vancouver Canucks’ Loss Ruins Historic 7-Team Sweep for Canadian Clubs Powered By Oilers, Maple Leafs

Canucks spoil historic night as six Canadian NHL teams win, falling one short of a rare sweep led by the Oilers and the Maple Leafs.

Canadian hockey fans were on the verge of witnessing something never seen before on Tuesday night. With all seven Canadian teams in action on March 24, 2026, the possibility of a perfect sweep was within reach until the Vancouver Canucks spoiled the moment.

Canucks Snap Perfect Run by Canadian Teams

For several hours, it looked like history might be made. Six Canadian clubs took care of business, putting the NHL on the brink of a rare clean sweep. However, Vancouver’s loss meant the milestone slipped away at the last moment.

The Montreal Canadiens opened the night with a convincing 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes, thanks in large part to Jakub Dobes, who turned aside 41 shots.

The Ottawa Senators followed with a tight 3-2 victory against the Detroit Red Wings, highlighted by Carter Yakemchuk scoring in his NHL debut. The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 4-2, powered by two goals from Matthew Knies.

The Winnipeg Jets defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-1, with Mark Scheifele recording three points. The Calgary Flames earned a 3-2 shootout win over the Los Angeles Kings, extending their winning streak to four games.

Meanwhile, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Utah Mammoth 5-2, a game highlighted by Connor McDavid reaching 400 career goals and 1,200 NHL points. But the streak ended when the Canucks fell 5-3 to the Anaheim Ducks. Mikael Granlund scored twice for Anaheim, while Vancouver couldn’t keep pace.

Rare All-Canadian NHL Sweep Falls Just Short

According to Sportsnet Stats, the six wins still marked only the sixth time in NHL history that six Canadian teams won on the same day. Had Vancouver completed the sweep, it would have been the first time in the league’s 108-year history that all seven Canadian teams won on the same calendar day.

The irony wasn’t lost on fans. Vancouver, sitting near the bottom of the Pacific Division, became the lone team to derail the potential historic moment. Social media quickly filled with reactions pointing out the twist.

Despite the loss, Elias Pettersson provided a milestone moment, recording two assists to reach 500 career NHL points, a silver lining on an otherwise frustrating night for Vancouver.

With the 2025–26 regular season set to conclude on April 16, there are no remaining dates where all seven Canadian teams are scheduled to play on the same night. That means the elusive all-Canadian sweep will have to wait, likely until next season.

For now, Tuesday’s near-perfect night stands as another “what if” moment, one win short of history.
