American star Jessica Pegula recently shared her thoughts on the chaotic situation she faced when her matches at the Miami Open were canceled due to rain. The World No. 5 has been performing impressively at her homeland’s tournament, advancing to the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles.
Jessica Pegula Reflects on Miami Open Rain Delay Chaos
Pegula, who stormed into the Miami Open as the fifth seed, has delivered notable performances at the tournament, defeating Leylah Fernandez in the round of 32 and surpassing Jaqueline Cristian in the round of 16 at the Butch Buchholz Stadium in straight sets.
In the quarterfinal round, Pegula will face Russian-Kazakhstani star Elena Rybakina, who last beat her in the same round at Indian Wells. In doubles with Storm Hunter, Pegula defeated Magda Linette and Ann Li in the round of 32.
In the round of 16, the duo advanced past Mirra Andreeva and Victoria Mboko via walkover and are set to face Elise Mertens and Zhang Shuai in their next clash.
During the recent episode of “The Player’s Box,” Pegula shed light on the mayhem caused by rainy weather at the Miami Open, as several matches and practice sessions were canceled, disrupting the schedule.
Pegula added, “You don’t want to go into the office because they’re usually all talking, trying to figure it out, and it’s like high stress and so you kind of just like poke your head in and you’re like, ‘Oh, I just like just check in to see if the schedule, like, do you have an idea of my match?’ And you try to be super nice because it’s usually pretty chaotic.”
She continued, “They’re already stressing itself. When they finally canceled me, I went into the office, and they were like, ‘No, no, it’s like James was kind of like, it’s like it’s done, but like it’s not technically official that I was canceled.’”
The Buffalo, New York, native also lightheartedly shared a conversation she had with Mariana, the supervisor, adding, “Finally walked away, and she goes, ‘Okay, you’ve been cancelled.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, like great.’ And she’s like, ‘Are you happy?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ And she’s like, ‘Oh, thank God.’ She just needed to hear like, ‘Yes, I’m happy with this decision that you made.’”

Furthermore, Pegula reflected on how the staff and other individuals were under pressure due to the situation: “Because obviously they were getting a lot of heat from other players who were in a different scenario that maybe weren’t as happy, and so she just she needed a little positive reinforcement.”
Apart from Pegula taking the situation in stride, the same didn’t hold true for the World No. 1, Aryna Sabalenka, whose opening match had to be moved to Butch Buchholz Stadium due to scheduling chaos, and Stadium Court was given to the ATP No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, and João Fonseca’s clash.
She had also shared that she was ‘shocked’ that the disruptions could cancel her match; however, she later expressed that she was content because the officials gave her options.
