Cam Skattebo is back in the news, but this time for all the wrong reasons. The New York Giants running back’s discourteous remarks on serious injuries have left the NFL world spellbound.
While postseason transfer talks fill the air and rookies await signing, Skattebo faced severe backlash. His mother, Becky, stepped in to defend him amid rising chaos.
Becky Skattebo Defends Giants RB Cam Skattebo’s Remarks With Personal Story
It all started when Frank Dalena of the “Bring The Juice” podcast asked Skattebo about his thoughts on the reality of head injuries and brain disease stemming from it. The young running back went ahead to make a “distasteful” joke.
“No, it’s an excuse,” Skattebo said. This drew a lot of criticism, as Boston University’s 2023 research surfaced, revealing that 91.7% of former NFL players who were analyzed after death had CTE.
Skattebo had also said that breathing issues associated with asthma were a fake medical condition and advised patients to “literally breathe air.”
In response, Skattebo dropped an apology on social media. His X post read:
“I recently did an interview and had a lapse in judgment, which resulted in me making a tasteless joke about CTE and asthma. It was never my intention to downplay the seriousness of head injuries or asthma. I sincerely apologize to anyone that was offended by my remarks, and I assure you that I’ll be more mindful and respectful going forward. Much love !!!”
The comment section was filled with people moved by the Giants running back’s remarks. When things escalated, Becky decided to step in. In a personal story, she went on to reveal how “you’ll never say all the right things” and how it went in “a direction it was never intended to go.” In an X post, she wrote:
If only people knew how many times cam had to “run and get mom’s inhaler” they’d realize the sarcasm…you’ll never make everyone happy and you’ll never say all the right things and people are bound to spin something sooner or later in a direction it was never intended to go. 🤷🏼♀️ https://t.co/vQmwFpLOOk

Nevertheless, Skattebo himself has seen a terrible injury in the 2025 season to give such remarks. The 105th overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft suffered a severe, season-ending right ankle dislocation and open tibia fracture in Week 8 of the 2025 season. It was an open wound and required emergency surgery.
While his 2025 season was cut short, Skattebo continues his rehab and expects to be fully healthy in time for training camp this summer, ready to give opponents a run for their money this season.
