Iva Jovic offered a candid glimpse into the emotional realities of life on tour, explaining how shared struggles create a unique bond among competitors. The 18-year-old American described what she called “trauma bonding” on the WTA Tour, emphasizing how players who battle each other on court often become the only people who truly understand the pressures, heartbreak, and unpredictability of professional tennis.
Iva Jovic Discusses the Emotional Connection Between WTA Competitors
Jovic’s comments come as she is making her Miami Open debut. Seeded 18th, the young American began her campaign with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Paula Badosa in the second round. As one of the brightest emerging talents in women’s tennis, her perspective carries weight, especially given the demanding nature of the tour, where players deal with constant travel, high-pressure matches, and unpredictable conditions.
During a Tennis Channel segment following Jovic’s victory, host Steve Weissman prompted the American to elaborate on trauma bonding, leading Jovic to describe the distinct connection that develops among players despite their on-court rivalry.
“I think it’s complex because obviously we’re all competitors, but we’re truly the ones that know what we’re going through,” she said. “Your competitors are the only ones that have kind of been in your shoes and know what you’re going through.”
She pointed out how shared experiences, such as tough losses, create a sense of understanding.
“So, you know, lose a match with match points, yeah, Maddie’s done that too. You know, we’ve all kind of been there, done that. When it’s raining like this, we’re all just huddled in the locker room trying to figure out what to do, what’s happening. So there’s just a lot of moments where we’re all kind of banding together and we’re on the same wavelength.”
She emphasized the silent understanding between players, adding, “We understand each other, we don’t have to speak. We just know. The players know.”

Fellow Players Helping Jovic Navigate WTA Tour Challenges
When asked by Weissman if there were specific players she leans on, Jovic highlighted the importance of humor in navigating the tour’s pressures. “I love Jennifer Brady, she’s hilarious. So whenever I’m feeling a little down, or something’s happening, I’ll always go to Jenny because she’ll have something funny to say about it, and we’ll get a little laugh going.”
She also mentioned Alexandra Eala as another player who brings levity during tense situations.
“Alex will also have some good laughs too in those crazy moments. So you really have to have humor with that. I mean, we’re going through all sorts of things, so you kind of just have to be humorous about it and let everything happen.”
Looking ahead, Jovic advanced to the third round, where she will take on Australian qualifier Talia Gibson. This will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour, with the American winning their only match at the 2025 Ilkley Open quarterfinals. The winner of this match will face either third seed Elena Rybakina or 27th seed Marta Kostyuk in the fourth round.
