Luka Dončić came up big for the Los Angeles Lakers in crunch time while LeBron James matched the most efficient shooting night of his career during Wednesday’s 124-116 road win over the Houston Rockets.
Upon dispatching Houston for the second straight contest to extend their winning streak to seven games, the Lakers left the NBA world lauding them for hitting their stride at the perfect time.
Luka Dončić’s Clutch ‘Masterclass’ vs. Rockets Sparks Rave Reactions
After embracing his role as LA’s third option behind Dončić and Reaves, James turned back the clock and delivered a remarkable shooting performance. The 23-year veteran went 13-for-14 from the field (92.9%), including six dunks, to match his career-best efficiency mark from back in 2013.

However, it was Dončić who stole the show late, doing everything possible to will his squad to victory behind a clutch masterclass. With the Lakers leading 110-109 with 3:12 remaining, the six-time All-Star rattled in a deep step-back 3-pointer to extend their advantage to 113-109.
After the Rockets responded on the other end, Dončić split a double-team and found forward Rui Hachimura running the baseline for an alley-oop slam to put LA in front 115-111.
Following some missed opportunities from both sides, Dončić executed a similar alley-oop after escaping another double-team, this time setting up James for an effortless two-handed finish, pushing their lead to 117-111.
Dončić didn’t stop there, though, drilling a contested step-back triple off the dribble with 58.4 seconds to go. The shot, which put the Lakers ahead 120-111, proved to be the dagger, with Houston unable to match his clutch shot-making ability amid his game-high 40-point eruption.
“LUKA IS UNREAL,” Bleacher Report captioned a photo of Dončić’s emphatic celebration.
“A masterclass in closing a game from Luka. 40-9-10. LA wins its 7th straight, improving to 44-25. They win the season series [with Houston],” The Athletic’s Jovan Buha asserted.
“Luka Dončić has been SENSATIONAL during this Lakers’ win streak,” ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel gushed.
“Holy smokes, man, Luka Dončić just absolutely obliterated the Rockets in the clutch. 5 straight possessions of getting great shots for him, LeBron, and Rui. He is ridiculous,” The Athletic’s Esfandiar Baraheni raved.
“THE LAKERS HAVE WON 7 STRAIGHT GAMES. FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS,” Legion Hoops exclaimed.
Dončić and Co.’s big-time win, which marked their third straight against an upper-echelon Western Conference opponent, prompted Lakers legend Magic Johnson to declare them a serious playoff threat.
“The Lakers are contenders in the West because of their outstanding improvement on defense,” Johnson wrote. “It’s been a total team effort, starting with man-to-man defense and their rotations and communication have been excellent. It says a lot about the great job JJ Redick is doing! The Lakers are the most exciting team to watch in the NBA!”
LA (44-25) now holds a one-and-a-half game cushion over the West’s fourth seed, positioning itself as arguably the biggest threat to the defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder (55-15) and upstart San Antonio Spurs (51-18).
The Lakers will look to keep their renewed defensive intensity up and secure their eighth straight win during Thursday’s road clash against the Miami Heat (38-31) on the second night of a back-to-back.
