Former NFL Star Robert Griffin III Backs Caitlin Clark After She Leads Team USA With 51 Points and 25 Assists Across FIBA World Cup Qualifiers

RG3 praised Caitlin Clark's FIBA World Cup Qualifier dominance, calling her 51 points and 25 assists across four games proof her game travels.

Caitlin Clark has been away from competitive basketball for eight months. Her return on the international stage at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has answered every question about whether she could pick up right where she left off. Former NFL quarterback and current sports analyst Robert Griffin III saw enough through four games to make his verdict clear.

Robert Griffin III Highlights Caitlin Clark’s FIBA World Cup Qualifier Numbers

On Sunday, March 15, Griffin III posted on X to put Clark’s tournament numbers in perspective.

“Caitlin Clark leads all Team USA players with 51 points and 25 assists through 4 games at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Qualifier. Looks like her game travels internationally,” Griffin wrote.

The numbers behind that post tell the full story. Across four games, Clark is averaging 12.8 points and 6.3 assists per game in 20 minutes while shooting 59.3% from the field, 45% from three, and 83.3% from the free throw line. She leads the squad in points (51), assists (25), and plus-minus, sitting at a remarkable plus-104 through four games.

She has also logged the highest average minutes (20) on the team, which is the clearest sign yet that the coaching staff has full confidence in her body after eight months on the sideline.

Clark has reached double digits in scoring in three of the four games. Her only exception was the second game against Puerto Rico, where she finished with eight points — a rare moment of rust. But since then, she has not looked back.

Griffin, meanwhile, seems to be closely following Team USA’s run at the qualifier in Puerto Rico. On Saturday, March 14, Griffin also posted a video clip featuring Clark, Angel Reese, and Paige Bueckers, adding a broader take on what this group represents for the future of the sport.

“The future of women’s basketball all on one team. Caitlin Clark. Angel Reese. Paige Bueckers. You LOVE TO SEE IT. These three on the same team in the WNBA would break the internet,” Griffin wrote.

Team USA is 4-0 in the tournament and has already secured qualification for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Berlin this September. The Americans have been outstanding throughout, with their 55-point win over New Zealand on Sunday their second-biggest margin of victory in the tournament, trailing only their 64-point blowout of Senegal in the opener.

Griffin played eight NFL seasons, most notably with the Washington Redskins, before transitioning into sports media. His post on Clark resonates with fans’ take that the game Clark plays does not need a specific setting or league to translate. Her 14-point outing vs. New Zealand on Sunday in Puerto Rico was just the latest proof of that.
