Donna Vekić and Madison Keys Tease Jessica Pegula After Indian Wells Exit

Pegula started her Indian Wells campaign in fine fashion. After getting a bye in the first round, she won against the likes of Donna Vekić, Jelena Ostapenko, and Belinda Bencic before being beaten by the reigning Australian Open champion, Elena Rybakina, in the quarterfinals.

After her exit, the American player shared a photo dump from her time at Indian Wells this year, captioning the post, “playing some good tennis these days.”

The post attracted the attention of Vekić, who was the second-round opponent for Pegula, and the Croatian humorously replied with “Average,” casually teasing the American. In one of her pictures from the photo dump, Pegula was shown leading the “aces” chart with 28 aces across three rounds. This prompted her compatriot and off-court friend, Madison Keys, to ask if she could get some serving tips from her.

Ashlyn Krueger joined in on the fun with her “serve bot?” comment, to which Pegula replied, “In my serve bot era.”

Even after the Indian Wells loss, it does not change the fact that Pegula has had a terrific start to the 2026 season. She started with semifinal finishes in Brisbane and at the Australian Open, losing to Marta Kostyuk and Elena Rybakina, respectively.

She then had her best run at the Dubai Tennis Championships, where she navigated a gauntlet of players, including Varvara Gracheva, Iva Jovic, Clara Tauson, and Amanda Anisimova, to reach the final. There, she beat Elina Svitolina to win her fourth WTA 1000 title.

Pegula’s next assignment will be the Miami Open, where she is the defending runner-up, having come second to Aryna Sabalenka in the 2025 edition. The American will have a decent chunk of points to defend and will be keen to make a deep run at the Hard Rock Stadium.

She has been one of the most consistent players on the WTA Tour over the last few years, consistently reaching the business end of tournaments, but has fallen short of the final hurdle a few times. Coming into Miami in her current form, she will be one of the pre-tournament favorites to lift the silverware at the end.
