The Montreal Canadiens made headlines for not making a move at the trade deadline. Despite staying quiet, the team had shown interest in several players as it sought to improve its chances of a deep playoff run. Now, an insider has addressed the reality behind the Canadiens’ reported interest in Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies.
Chris Johnston Explains the Reality Behind the Canadiens’ Deadline Buzz
The Canadiens currently sit third in the Atlantic Division and appear well-positioned for a playoff push. Despite that, Montreal’s front office chose to stand pat at the deadline rather than disrupt a young roster that has been building chemistry throughout the season.
Still, reports later revealed that the Canadiens were working on at least one deal that nearly came together before the deadline. The trade ultimately never materialized, though there is speculation that the team could revisit that opportunity during the offseason.
Because Montreal had previously shown interest in Knies, many observers quickly connected the dots and assumed he might have been the target of that last-minute deal.
However, NHL insider Chris Johnston clarified that the situation wasn’t quite what it appeared. “I don’t believe I think people are erring by connecting the two. The deal that went down to the wire, supposedly that the Canadians were working on before the deadline and then the fact that they had interest in Matthew Knies. I think it’s two separate things,” Johnston said.
“Now, the Canadians did call the Leafs about Knies. You know, I don’t believe they’re the only team that did that. And his name was discussed in trade discussions ahead… but you know my impression is that nothing went too far on that front.”
Johnston’s comments suggest that while Montreal did inquire about Knies, the discussions never advanced into anything serious and were unrelated to the deal that nearly happened at the deadline’s end.
Canadiens Sticking With Their Young Core
Even without making a splash at the deadline, Montreal remains confident in its direction. The organization has embraced a youth-focused retool built around a promising core that includes Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Juraj Slafkovský, and rookie standout Ivan Demidov.

General manager Kent Hughes also expressed optimism about the current roster and the team’s trajectory. “The glass is half full. I think that’s the way to look at it, and I think that’s how our players look at it,” Hughes said.
For now, Montreal’s next test comes Saturday when the Canadiens face the San Jose Sharks.
