Iga Świątek’s difficult run in the 2026 season continued as the Pole crashed out in the quarterfinals for the third consecutive time, this time falling to Elina Svitolina at the ongoing BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells. Reflecting on the victory, Svitolina credited her aggressive game plan for helping her overcome Świątek.

Świątek entered the quarterfinal as the clear favorite, holding a 4–1 head-to-head advantage over Svitolina and having won four of their previous encounters. However, the Ukrainian arrived on Court 2 determined to turn the tide.
Svitolina kept her composure under the scorching heat of the California desert and quickly surged to a 3-0 lead in the opening set, while Świątek continued to struggle on her second serve. The 31-year-old maintained her momentum to take the set 6-2 and appeared firmly in control as the match progressed.
Świątek responded swiftly in the second set, breaking early to move 3-1 ahead and backing it up with a comfortable hold for 4-1. However, the Ukrainian held serve and then clawed back a break for 4-3. Świątek later held for 5-4, but a string of errors from Svitolina in the following game allowed the world No. 2 to wrap up the set 6-4.
The final set proved just as fiercely contested, with both players battling for control. Svitolina ultimately seized control, breaking Świątek before calmly serving out the contest with a love hold to secure the victory.
While the victory sent Svitolina into the semifinals, Świątek’s campaign came to a disappointing end. The 31-year-old later reflected on her performance during the post-match press conference.
“Yeah, it was a good day for me. I played really well. I mean, I wouldn’t say it was the perfect match, but in a way, I could stay in the match and fight and find a way after losing second set. But, yeah, definitely very happy with the performance,” she said.
When asked whether she had deliberately adopted a more aggressive approach against the Pole, Svitolina clarified that it was part of her overall strategy, explaining that against such a formidable opponent, she could not afford to waste opportunities and had to consistently create chances to attack.
“Yeah, it’s not only against her, but I think just generally trying to be more aggressive, trying to go for my shots. There is no champion who is waiting for the mistakes, and you have to really try to set up yourself in a good position to attack,” she said.

“Yeah, I was feeling good. I was trying to really, you know, open up the court and try to take the advantage, because Iga is such an aggressive player, and she moves really well. So if you don’t, in the right time, you don’t take the opportunity, she’s gonna take it. So, yeah,” she added.
Svitolina will next face Elena Rybakina, who secured a 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over home favorite Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals. According to PFSN’s exclusive simulator, the Kazakh is favored to win with a 68% chance. Meanwhile, the loss has put Świątek back to square one as she looks to return stronger in Miami.
