Matthew Tkachuk has spent the last two years reaching the very top of hockey, winning both the Stanley Cup at the NHL level and an Olympic gold medal with Team USA. While both achievements represent the pinnacle of the sport, the Florida Panthers star recently explained that the experiences are very different.
Matthew Tkachuk Compares Winning the Stanley Cup to Olympic Gold
Matthew Tkachuk has built an impressive résumé in a short time. He helped the Florida Panthers win back-to-back Stanley Cups, including the franchise’s first title in 2024 against the Edmonton Oilers and another in 2025, where he scored the Cup-clinching goal in Game 6.
He added to that success last month by helping the United States men’s national ice hockey team win gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, recording six assists as Team USA defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime for its first Olympic gold since the Miracle on Ice in 1980.

With both achievements now on his résumé, Tkachuk was asked to compare the feeling of winning the Stanley Cup versus capturing Olympic gold. “It’s been a question I’ve been getting a lot. I’m very lucky to have won both, let me say that first and foremost,” he admitted.
According to Tkachuk, winning the Stanley Cup is physically exhausting and unlike anything else in sports. “Winning a Stanley Cup physically on your body is so tough,” Tkachuk said. “It’s the hardest trophy to win in sports, and when it’s done and you’re lifting the cup and your body is mangled, you realize how hard it is to win it. There is something special about having your name engraved on that for history.”
At the same time, the Olympics brought a completely different kind of emotion.
Tkachuk explained that representing the United States created a sense of national pride that went beyond the sport itself. “With that being said, the Olympics and representing the greatest country in the world, we had people tuning in who had never watched hockey before, who were just fans of USA,” he said.
He even mentioned meeting someone who started watching only because of the team’s patriotic atmosphere and has since become a hockey fan.
With these accomplishments, Tkachuk joins a rare group of players who have won a Memorial Cup, multiple Stanley Cups, and Olympic gold.

However, another title run looks unlikely this season. The Panthers sit near the bottom of the Atlantic Division and are 11 points out of a Wild Card spot, putting their playoff hopes in doubt.
Even so, Tkachuk’s success in both the NHL and internationally has already cemented his legacy among the game’s top players.
