Jessica Pegula finally cracked a puzzle that had troubled her for years. The American star defeated 12th seed Belinda Bencic 6-3, 7-6(5) in the fourth round of the 2026 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells to book her place in the quarterfinals for the second time. The victory carried extra weight for Pegula because she had entered the contest with a 0-4 record against the Swiss star and had never managed to take even a single set off her in their previous meetings.
Jessica Pegula Explains How She Finally Cracked the Belinda Bencic Challenge
The matchup with Bencic had long been a difficult one for Pegula. In their earlier encounters, the Swiss player consistently found ways to neutralize the American’s game. That history made the fourth-round clash in the California desert particularly compelling. While Bencic still leads the head-to-head series 4-1 after the result, Pegula’s victory marked a meaningful shift in their rivalry.
Speaking during her on-court interview after the match, Pegula acknowledged both the challenge Bencic has posed throughout her career and the satisfaction of finally overcoming it. She joked about turning the rivalry around, saying, “Had to turn the tables today. Nobody beats me five times in a row. Gosh.”
Pegula then reflected on how much her game has evolved since their last meeting. “But yeah, she’s been a really tough opponent for me. But I feel like since the last time I played her, I’m a different player. I feel like I’m a better player. So I just had to go in with confidence and accepting of the challenge that I had to figure out a way to at least get a set.”
Pegula also explained that her strategy centered on protecting her serve while applying pressure on Bencic’s delivery. “She’s a really good returner, so I know I had to focus on my serve a lot. I’ve been serving really well here, so I just wanted to keep that confidence going. Not afraid to move the serve around, go for my second serves, and know that she’s going to hit some good returns,” she said.
“And then on her serve, I think just pressure her serve a lot. I’m a really good returner, so I like to put a lot of pressure. I wanted to come out doing that right away.”
What Adjustments Helped Pegula Turn the Tables on Bencic?
Pegula admitted that the second set presented a tense moment when she briefly lost control of the match. “I felt like in the second set when I got up there, I had a little bit of a lull where I had a couple of game points and I could have maybe been up more, finished the match. But at the same time, she’s a really good player. And when you don’t quite finish those off, that’s where she can come in. And that’s what she did. So she made me have to earn it today.”
Later in her post-match press conference, Pegula reiterated how meaningful it felt to finally overcome a player who had repeatedly troubled her. “Really happy with today, being able to turn around my pretty poor record against Belinda,” she said. “So, you know, when you’re able to figure that out and get over that hump, it’s always a good feeling. Just excited that I was able to, yeah, accept that challenge and figure it out.”
Looking ahead, Pegula will face the third seed and 2023 champion, Elena Rybakina, in the quarterfinals. This is going to be their eighth meeting on the WTA Tour, with the Kazakh star holding a 4-3 lead in their head-to-head record. The winner of this match will face either ninth seed Elina Svitolina or second seed Iga Świątek in the semifinals.
