Taylor Fritz Gains Ally in Former Pro After Being Denounced As the ‘Most Overrated American Player’

Taylor Fritz finds support from a former pro after being labeled the ‘most overrated American player’ by a fan.

Former Australian tennis player Rennae Stubbs recently came to the defense of Taylor Fritz after a troll labeled him the “most overrated American player.” Fritz was last seen in action at the BNP Paribas Open, where he suffered a surprise third-round exit.

Taylor Fritz Receives Backing From Former Pro After Being Labeled As ‘Overrated American’ by a Fan

Fritz currently sits at No. 7 in the ATP rankings and has consistently maintained his place inside the top 10 in recent years. The American also closed the previous season on a solid note, compiling a 53–23 win-loss record and capturing two titles at Eastbourne International and Stuttgart Open, and even reaching the final in Tokyo and semifinals in the Miami Open, Wimbledon Championships, and the Canadian Open.

However, the American has yet to replicate that level of consistency this season. The American reached the fourth round of the Australian Open before producing his best result of the year with a runner-up finish at the Dallas Open. He followed that run with a quarterfinal exit at the Delray Beach Open.

Fritz opened his campaign at the BNP Paribas Open with a hard-fought three-set victory over Jacob Fearnley. However, he struggled to find his rhythm in the third round, where Alex Michelsen produced a surprise 6–4, 7–6(8) win to knock him out of the tournament.

Amid Fritz’s run in the 2026 season, a fan on Threads bluntly called him the “most overrated player.” “Taylor Fritz might be the most overrated American tennis player we have ever seen,” they wrote.

However, a few days later, four-time women’s doubles Grand Slam champion Rennae Stubbs took note of the fan’s comment and pushed back, questioning whether they understood how the ranking system works.

For context, ATP rankings are determined by results and points accumulated over a rolling 52-week period, rather than reputation or hype. Players typically reach the top 10 only by consistently winning matches and making deep runs at tournaments. Notably, Fritz has also held the distinction of being the top-ranked American for much of the past few years.

“Tell me you know nothing about Tennis and how the ranking system works???” she asked.

Fritz will now aim to improve his modest 10–7 win-loss record in 2026 as he turns his attention to the Miami Open. The American enjoyed a strong run at the event last year, reaching the semifinals before suffering a narrow 6–7(7), 6–4, 6–7(7) defeat to Jakub Mensik. It remains to be seen whether Fritz can rediscover his rhythm and produce a deeper run this time around.
