Alabama wide receiver Ryan Williams had an inconsistent second season in Tuscaloosa last year, as the Crimson Tide’s offense flattered to deceive. Entering his second season in college football, Williams had been tabbed to be one of the most exciting offensive players in the country.
Ahead of the 2026 college football season, Williams is one of the most seasoned players in coach Kalen DeBoer’s offense and is facing heightened expectations after opting to return to Tuscaloosa.
ESPN Analyst Details Ryan Williams’ Revival After Rocky Season
During Tuesday’s segment of the “Paul Finebaum Show,” ESPN analyst Adam Rittenberg detailed how Williams is perceived within the Alabama setup ahead of a pivotal 2026 season.
“There’s still a lot of talent in that program. We forgot about Ryan Williams,” Rittenberg said. “I remember talking to Ryan before the Rose Bowl about his season that certainly didn’t go as planned after his incredible freshman year. He has decided to stick it out and he has learned a lot about himself.
“His teammates are really supportive of all that he’s gone through. Got to campus at 17-years old, became a national superstar overnight. Had that incredible play against Georgia and it’s been rocky since, especially last season with the dropped passes. There’s hope that he’ll take a step forward this season. Still has the ability to make an impact in 2026.”
Williams struggled with dropped passes, totaling 13 (13.6% drop per target rate) over the course of the season, as the Crimson Tide labored offensively in blowout losses in the SEC championship game and the Rose Bowl.
Kalen DeBoer Lavishes Praise on Williams
While speaking to reporters after spring practice on Tuesday, Kalen DeBoer revealed the difference in Williams during the offseason and how it will impact the Crimson Tide next season.
“Well Ryan, you may have someone that’s played as many snaps as anyone on our offense,” DeBoer said. “That’s, again, [roster] turnover speaks to that. But he’s taken that on. He’s taken on a leadership role. In order to lead and be vocal like he has, it’s in him. He brings an energy and an enthusiasm that you guys all see. It’s nonstop.
“It feels like he’s seeing an opportunity. He continues to raise the work, raise the level, and be efficient in it. I think where he’s focusing that attention is really intentional. It’s great to see his leadership capabilities. Last year, I felt like he took a great step, and now it’s on another level. Our team needs that, our offense needs that.”
Last season, Williams tallied 689 receiving yards on 49 catches, resulting in 4 touchdowns, earning a PFSN’s CFB WR Impact score of 77.3. His offensive production suffered considerably after he managed 865 receiving yards on 48 catches, resulting in 8 touchdowns during his freshman season.
