Giants Make Fullback the Highest-Paid at the Position

NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Giants agreed to a two-year contract with six-time Pro Bowler fullback Patrick Ricard. The deal carries a maximum value of $8.5 million and a base value of $7.63 million, making Ricard the highest-paid fullback in the NFL.

The market-resetting deal surpasses the previous mark held by 49ers’ fullback Kyle Juszczyk.

Ricard leaves Baltimore after nine seasons with the Ravens, where he became one of the league’s most recognizable fullbacks. Nicknamed “Pancake Pat,” Ricard built a reputation for punishing lead blocks that frequently left defenders on the ground.

His impact on the Ravens’ rushing attack was significant. Since Ricard became a full-time fullback in 2019, Baltimore has rushed for 20,078 yards. That total is more than 3,600 yards ahead of any other team in the NFL during that span.

Ricard helped pave the way for productive seasons from multiple running backs during his time in Baltimore. Derrick Henry, Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, and J.K. Dobbins each recorded at least one 800-yard rushing season while running behind Ricard.

Reunion With John Harbaugh

Ricard originally entered the NFL as an undrafted defensive lineman out of Maine in 2017. The Ravens quickly discovered his versatility and used him as both a defensive tackle and a fullback early in his career.

In 2019, Ricard became the first NFL player in a decade to play more than 100 snaps on offense and defense in the same season. After that year, he transitioned to a full-time offensive role.

Ricard went on to earn six Pro Bowl selections along with multiple All-Pro honors during his career with Baltimore.

His presence also had a measurable impact on the Ravens’ rushing production last season. Baltimore averaged 126.2 rushing yards per game during the six games Ricard missed with a calf injury. In the 11 games he played, that number jumped to 173.2 yards per game.

Ricard now follows Harbaugh to New York as the coach begins reshaping the Giants roster. Several former Ravens players have already joined the team this offseason, including Isaiah Likely, Jordan Stout, and Ar’Darius Washington.

The Giants have not regularly featured a traditional fullback since Henry Hynoski held the role during the early 2010s. Ricard’s arrival suggests Harbaugh may bring elements of Baltimore’s physical rushing identity with him to New York.
