Giants Fix Glaring Roster Need With $10,000,000 Investment in 25-Year-Old Starter in Free Agency

The Giants recently signed Greg Newsome II in 2026 NFL free agency to replace Cor'Dale Flott in their defensive secondary.

The New York Giants have been busy during the 2026 NFL offseason so far. They recently hired John Harbaugh to take over as their new coach and have supplemented the move by making major roster adjustments. This includes signing a young star in free agency to address one of their biggest needs.

Giants Sign Cornerback Greg Newsome II to Address Secondary Need

The Harbaugh era is officially underway in New York as the Giants look to get back on track after firing Brian Daboll. The former Baltimore Ravens head coach brings a history of success, and the franchise can now start building the team in his overall vision.

They recently made strides in doing so during the legal tampering period ahead of free agency. They addressed their secondary, a major area of concern, by adding one of the top available cornerbacks this year.

“Greg Newsome II reached agreement today on a one-year deal worth up to $10 million with the New York Giants,” NFL insider Adam Schefter reported.

Greg Newsome II spent most of his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2025 season. He is a former first-round pick in the NFL Draft and still just 25 years old, so he theoretically has plenty of upside in the right situation.

He should get plenty of opportunities to contribute to the Giants’ defense, especially considering that cornerback is one of their weakest positions. The Giants were reportedly expecting Cor’Dale Flott to return to New York on a new contract, according to SNY’s Connor Hughes, but he instead decided to join Daboll on the Tennessee Titans.

Flott turned in an excellent season for the Giants last year, finishing 19th among all cornerbacks in PFSN’s Impact Rankings. His apparently unexpected departure put them in a tough spot for their defensive secondary, but they quickly addressed the issue by bringing in Newsome.

He will essentially be on a speculative contract, as Schefter reported he will earn up to $10 million on a one-year deal.

Newsome’s best career finish in the Impact Rankings is just 40th, so while he appears to be a downgrade from Flott, his age and previous expectations give him relatively cheap upside.

The Giants eliminated most of the risk associated with signing him by declining a long-term contract. If he performs during his first season in New York, they also have the option to negotiate an extension.
