Jets Predicted To Sign Pro Bowl CB in Free Agency To Fill Void Left by Sauce Gardner’s Trade to Jets

With Sauce Gardner gone, the Jets could turn to a Pro Bowl cornerback in free agency to quickly fill the massive gap in their defense.

The New York Jets could be heading toward a major defensive reset after a stunning trade involving star cornerback Sauce Gardner. Moving on from one of the league’s premier young defenders leaves a massive void in the secondary. With free agency approaching, speculation is already building about how the Jets might respond. One Pro Bowl CB is now being predicted as a potential signing to stabilize the defense and fill Gardner’s spot.

Nahshon Wright Could Be the Answer to the Jets’ Post-Sauce Gardner Secondary

The Jets may be forced to reshape their secondary if a major move involving star CB Gardner becomes a reality. Losing a cornerstone defender would leave a massive void in the defense. As speculation grows, one intriguing name has surfaced as a potential replacement: Nahshon Wright. The Pro Bowl corner is coming off a breakout season and could emerge as a free-agency target to stabilize the Jets’ defense.

The Jets traded star Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts on Nov. 4, 2025, just before the NFL trade deadline. Indianapolis acquired the two-time All-Pro defender in exchange for wide receiver Adonai Mitchell and two first-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027.

At the time, the Colts were 7–2 and pushing for a deep playoff run, while the struggling Jets used the blockbuster deal to collect major draft capital and begin reshaping their roster for the future.

Before being traded, Gardner had appeared in seven games for the Jets during the 2025 season. In that span, the star CB recorded 20 total tackles, including 15 solo tackles and 5 assisted tackles. He also registered 6 passes defended, while notching zero interceptions and zero forced fumbles through those first seven games of the season.

Despite the lack of interceptions, Gardner continued to play a key role in New York’s secondary with his coverage ability, which remained one of the main reasons the Colts aggressively traded for the two-time All-Pro CB at the deadline. He ranked 10th in PFSN’s NFL CB Impact Rankings with a score of 86.0.

However, a new report suggests the Jets may already have a potential replacement in mind. Wright has emerged as a predicted target to help fill the void left by Gardner. The former Dallas Cowboys defensive back brings valuable experience in the secondary, making him an intriguing option if the Jets decide to reinforce their CB unit in free agency.

Wright had a strong 2025 season with the Chicago Bears, appearing in 17 games with 16 starts. During that campaign, Wright recorded 80 total tackles (54 solo and 26 assisted) along with 5 interceptions, 11 passes defended, and 2 forced fumbles. He also returned one interception for a touchdown and totaled 118 interception return yards, highlighting his ability to create big defensive plays.

Across his NFL career so far, Wright has played 50 games, registering 117 total tackles, 6 interceptions, and 16 passes defended while contributing across multiple teams in the secondary.

Those numbers highlight why Wright could be an intriguing addition for the Jets. With solid tackling ability, ball-hawking instincts, and the capacity to disrupt passes in coverage, Wright brings the kind of physical presence the Jets may need after moving on from Gardner. If the team decides to pursue him, Wright’s experience could help stabilize New York’s secondary moving forward.
