LeBron James, Kevin Garnett, and the NBA world react as Jayson Tatum returns from a torn Achilles after nearly 10 months of rehab.

After nearly 10 months of rehab for a torn right Achilles tendon, Jayson Tatum finally returned to the court for the Boston Celtics, and the NBA world quickly took notice.

The six-time All-Star made his 2025–26 season debut on March 6 against the Dallas Mavericks, marking an emotional milestone in a recovery many once thought would sideline him for the entire season.

NBA World Buzzes Over Jayson Tatum’s Return After Achilles Injury

Despite some early rust, Tatum showed flashes of his usual all-around impact. He finished the game with 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists, shooting 6-of-16 from the field and 3-of-8 from beyond the arc.

His return comes at a perfect time for the Celtics. They have stayed afloat without their franchise cornerstone, posting a 42–21 record and holding the second seed in the East, largely behind the leadership of Jaylen Brown.

As soon as Tatum checked in and got on the scoreboard, the reaction around the league poured in.

LeBron James welcomed him back with a celebratory message on X.

“WELCOME BACK BIG DEUCE!!! @jaytatum0 🙏🏾💪🏾🫡🔥”

Sports personality Pat McAfee highlighted just how remarkable the recovery timeline was.

“I can’t believe this dude Jayson Tatum is playing right now.

CRAZY work ethic and commitment to get back from a torn Achilles less than 300 days ago.”

Celtics reporter Noa Dalzell captured the moment Tatum finally got on the board.

“Jayson Tatum is on the board!

The Celtics bench is going nuts.”

Former NBA champion Kevin Garnett also chimed in, pointing to the renewed power of the Celtics’ star duo of Tatum and Brown.

“Less energy around is it JB or Tatum’s team and MORE energy around how tough of a mf duo it is! Welcome back JT!”

On ESPN, former NBA guard John Wall spoke about Tatum’s intense rehab process while appearing with MJ Acosta-Ruiz:

“You watch the whole process. He didn’t show you too much film on it or what he was doing. But from day one, you could see how he attacked the rehab.

He was going after the most you can. And those first three months are key. And he went out there like, listen, I’m coming back.”

Meanwhile, former NBA coach David Fizdale said the comeback didn’t surprise him.

“I’m not surprised. And the fact that, you know, this guy is a hungry student of the game. He is really about his legacy. He’s about not cheating the game. One of my favorite players just because he just never cheats us. You know he’s in the gym. You can tell every year when he comes back he’s added something new.”

Even veteran commentator Skip Bayless acknowledged the moment.

“Welcome back, Jayson Tatum. Amazing recovery.”

Dalzell also shared a video chronicling Tatum’s rehabilitation journey, calling it a powerful look at the Celtics star’s road back.

“Hell of a tribute chronicling Jayson Tatum return. What a story.”

For a player coming back from one of basketball’s most feared injuries, Tatum’s return instantly became one of the most talked-about moments across the league. Tatum’s return makes the Celtics a serious title threat.
