The New York Jets are seeking an answer at quarterback during the 2026 NFL offseason. Their experiments with Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor last year essentially failed, so they are expected to be in the market again. A team reporter has recently tied them to three surprising veteran options.
Jets Reportedly Targeting 3 Veteran Quarterbacks in 2026 Free Agency
The Jets have been working on rebuilding their roster, but have yet to successfully address arguably their biggest concern. They are currently without a true starting quarterback at this point in the offseason after Fields and Taylor failed to lock down the long-term job last year.
Connor Hughes recently reported on the situation and discussed their potential plan for the position. This includes them apparently having interest in a few veterans and attempting a similar approach to what the New York Giants used last year.
“The Jets might not target just one quarterback in free agency. Belief from agents who met with them at the NFL Combine is that they prefer to add two … Watch Geno Smith and Carson Wentz. There is interest there. Jacoby Brissett, too, if Cardinals can be convinced to part. Was told that’s ‘doubtful,’ ” said Hughes.
He then went on to expand further on the possibility of the Jets adding Wentz, in addition to their alleged interest in Brissett and Smith. The veteran quarterback previously played under Reich during their time together with the Indianapolis Colts, where Reich served as head coach.
“Wentz might surprise some, because of the notion Frank Reich and Wentz relationship fell apart in Indianapolis. From my understanding, that was more GM and owner, not coach. The two remain very close. One source told me that the QB Reich prefers is Wentz. A quote from another: ‘No one loves Wentz more than Frank,’ ” added Hughes.
The #Jets might not target just one quarterback in free agency. Belief from agents who met with them at the NFL Combine is that they prefer to add two — if they can. It’s similar to what the #Giants did a year ago (Russell Wilson, Jameis Winston).

Rumors have circled for years that Reich wanted to move on from Wentz when he was with the Colts, but Hughes’ report apparently sees it a different way.
His sources have even claimed that the Jets offensive coordinator prefers a reunion with Wentz among all of their potential options this year.
Wentz made five starts for the Minnesota Vikings last year and showed he can still provide value in the right situation. New York may be one of them. His lone season playing under Reich in Indianapolis includes a solid 9-8 record with 27 touchdown passes and just seven interceptions.
