Arsenal Legend Sounds Alarm to Arne Slot on What Might Prompt Liverpool To Sack Him

Arsenal great Alan Smith has asserted Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has to secure a UEFA Champions League spot to save his job.

Liverpool’s below-par season has been a major talking point for the last few months, with a host of rumors emerging about head coach Arne Slot’s future of late. And an Arsenal great has predicted the conditions under which the Dutch tactician could be sacked.

Arsenal Icon Warns Liverpool Head Coach About Sacking

During a recent interview with BestBettingSites, former Arsenal striker Alan Smith asserted Slot’s team were underwhelming in their recent 2-1 Premier League loss at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He also claimed that the Reds should focus on beating Wolves in the FA Cup on Friday, Mar. 6, to better their chances of not finishing the season without silverware.

“I don’t think they’re going to win the Champions League… (they were) so poor on Tuesday against Wolves. I thought they had maybe turned a corner. But a lot to solve there. (The FA Cup) is their best chance at silverware, so we’ll see how they get on. Can they achieve a bit of revenge after being so poor?” the former England international remarked.

Smith, who helped Arsenal lift two league titles between 1987 and 1995, further suggested that Slot’s job could be under threat if the Reds fail to finish the season strongly.

“Slot will be under pressure. There’s no question. If the Reds don’t finish in the Champions League spot, given the money that they’ve spent, you can talk about player injuries and all that all you like, he’ll be under big pressure,” the 63-year-old commented.

Smith continued, “I mean, historically, Liverpool haven’t been a sacking club. They’ve been loyal to the managers. Has that changed now with time, given how football is? I think he’d be worried for his job if they finish out of the top five and don’t win anything.”

Slot’s Difficult Second Season at Liverpool

Slot, 47, has endured a difficult second season at his club after lifting the Premier League title last term. He has overseen 23 wins and 13 defeats in 42 games across competitions at the Merseyside outfit, who spent approximately £450 million (over $550 million) last summer, in the 2025-26 season.

Liverpool are sixth in the Premier League table with 48 points from 29 outings, boasting a goal difference of +9. After taking on Wolves in the FA Cup fifth round on Friday, they will visit Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on Mar. 10. The Reds will then be in action in the Premier League against Tottenham Hotspur on Mar. 15.
