Just before free agency begins next week, it seems the NFL is busy in the trade market. After missing the playoffs, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to make major changes to the team, and it seems one more has been added to the list.
The Los Angeles Rams, who were a Super Bowl favorite last season, have traded for Chiefs star cornerback Trent McDuffie.
NFL World Reacts to Blockbuster Deal Between Rams and Chiefs for All-Pro Trent McDuffie
Last season, McDuffie did not play at his usual high level, but in 2024, he was an All-Pro. In PFSN’s CB Impact Metric, McDuffie was the 19th-best CB that season, and that is what the Rams are trading for.
In this trade, Los Angeles sent Kansas City the 29th overall pick in 2026, a 5th rounder, a 6th rounder, and a 2027 3rd round pick. This was a massive trade for both sides, and like always, the NFL World reacted.
Former NFL QB Dan Orlovsky clearly stated what this move means for the Rams, “SB or bust.”

NFL insider Ian Rapoport speaks on the Rams’ thought process and how the MVP Matthew Stafford’s future pushed this decision. “The Rams have several of their own players to pay, but that won’t stop them from loading up in free agency and with trades. Going for it in what may be the final year for Matthew Stafford,” wrote Rapoport on X.

Chiefs insider Carrington Harrison reveals how past decisions from the team may have hinted at this outcome. “When the Chiefs didn’t sign McDuffie last offseason and essentially chose Trey Smith over him, that was the sign,” explained Harrison.

Harrison also added his opinion on the trade compensation for both sides. He added, “That’s more than fair compensation. The Chiefs only had 6 picks this year, got a 1st for their most valuable trade piece. The Rams got a top 10 corner. Everyone is a winner.”

Both Rapoport and fellow NFL Insider Adam Schefter both brought up past trades that the Chiefs made, which are very reminiscent of the McDuffie move.
Rapoport wrote, “A few years ago, the Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill for draft picks and used the picks to rebuild their defense. This time, it’s McDuffie for picks.”

While Schefter said, “Back in 2028, the Chiefs traded All-Pro CB Marcus Peters to the Rams. Now in 2026, they are trading another All-Pro CB, Trent McDuffie, and again, it’s to the Rams.”

Schefter also brought up how many times the Rams have traded their first-round pick in the past 10 years, “FThemPicks: The Rams now have traded their first round pick nine times in the last 10 years.”
NFL insider Ari Meirov raised the important point that the Rams own the Atlanta Falcons’ first-round pick this offseason. “The Rams just got Trent McDuffie and they still have the No. 13 overall pick from the Falcons in the James Pearce trade from last year.”

NFL Writer Ted Nguyen spoke on how important this move was to the Rams’ roster. “Whew huge upgrade to the Ram’s biggest weakness. F them picks is back!” exclaimed Nguyen.

NFL insider Jeremy Fowler speaks on the Chiefs’ thought process, “The Chiefs are confident in their ability to draft and need cheap labor. The Trent McDuffie trade allows them to reload the roster in a big way.”

Sports content creator Meghan Townsley provides her opinion, “Trent McDuffie to the Rams?! I fear this might be too good of a fit.”

NFL Insider Trevor Sikkema believes that this move was a win for both teams. “If KC wasn’t going to keep McDuffie long-term this is a great haul in return. I also love the Rams slamming their foot on the gas pedal with that extra first round pick. No hot takes here, just a good deal for both sides.”

And last, but certainly not least, Chiefs star QB Patrick Mahomes gives his input after the McDuffie trade. “Damn..” wrote Mahomes in a post on X.

This was a massive trade for both teams, and it caused a storm of reactions in the NFL World. Now, CB has become a massive need for the Chiefs, and the Rams’ Super Bowl roster was just upgraded.
