The No. 1 Duke Blue Devils blew out the unranked NC State Wolfpack 93-64 on Monday evening at Lenovo Center to improve to 28-2 for the season. The win also clinched coach Jon Scheyer’s team the ACC regular-season title outright and marked the program’s 22nd regular-season conference championship.
NC State Coach Pays Duke the Ultimate Compliment
During his postgame news conference, NC State coach Will Wade paid the rampant Blue Devils the ultimate compliment after their demolition job on his team in Raleigh and made a huge claim about Scheyer’s team.
“These guys are in a little different weight class than us right now,” Wade said. “We know what we’ve got to get to. We could see that live and in person today. This is where we have to strive to get up to that weight class.”
He added, “We know where the standard is now. Our eyes are wide open to that and what to chase. Duke’s whole operation was incredible. To see it in person was unparalleled to anything I’ve seen as a coach.”
The Blue Devils were dominant in Raleigh, and despite the teams being tied at 18-18 with nine minutes gone, they got into a punishing rhythm and closed out the first half with a commanding 47-30 lead, and the Wolfpack never closed that gap throughout the rest of the game.
Jon Scheyer Acknowledges His Team’s Stellar Season
During his postgame news conference after the win against NC State, Jon Scheyer lavished praise on his team’s accomplishments so far this season and detailed why they are ranked No. 1 in the country.
“In this group, I think it’s not necessarily that I haven’t learned anything new each game, but I think they continue to grow,” Scheyer said.
He continued, “So I think from that perspective, I’m learning every game, but just their approach, man, because I think as a coach, you’re always thinking about what can go wrong and what if we’re not ready with you guys, right?”
Scheyer added, “I never do that, but just to me, their approach to show up as a young team every game with a competitive spirit, I just think is unique and high level, and that’s been the most impressive part to me.”
The Blue Devils will host bitter rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels, in Durham in their final regular-season game to close out an incredible season for the college basketball blue bloods as they gear up for the NCAA Tournament, where they will be favorites to win their first national championship in 11 years.
