Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe Reunited Before Indian Wells

The Masters 1000 Indian Wells is the first tournament of the year at this level and features a star-studded lineup, including Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and many others. As the United States hosts the event, top-ranked American stars – Fritz, Shelton, Paul, and others – immediately come into the spotlight.

Currently, Fritz and Shelton are ranked world No. 7 and world No. 8, respectively, with Tiafoe and Paul right behind them at world No. 22 and world No. 24, respectively. Given their high ranking and status in professional tennis, all eyes are on these stars’ latest activities, and before the main draw kicks off, they were seen sharing a lighthearted moment.

Fritz and Paul, longtime close friends since their junior days, reunited during practice sessions amid the jam-packed ATP calendar. They share a common sponsor, Motorola, which posted a polaroid on its official Instagram account, tagging both stars and writing “MOTO BOYZ” under the photograph. Fritz reposted this on his Instagram story, adding a caption, “Moto Boyz are soooo back.”

These American stars describe each other as their closest friends, “if not best friends,” and have seen each other grow to the top. From sharing dorms to teaming in the Olympics and securing the bronze medal in doubles, their journey together shows just how far they have come.

On the other side, Shelton and Tiafoe, rising Black American stars, were seen hugging each other on the practice courts after their lovely reunion. The official X account of BNP Paribas Open posted an image of these two, laughing and hugging, captioned, “Besties👯#TennisParadise.”

Over the past few years, these two have formed a strong bond, with Shelton calling Tiafoe “one of my best friends on tour.” They are known for friendly banter, with both stars calling each other out for their habits. From teaming together to facing each other in highly competitive on-court battles, these two promise huge success at their home grounds.

The Americans’ Performances Heading Into Indian Wells

Of the four Americans, Shelton is in the best form, having made deep runs at multiple tournaments and lifted a title so far this season. After a quarterfinal exit in the ASB Classic, he reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 Australian Open, losing to the two-time defending champion Jannik Sinner. He then returned to the States for the Dallas Open, where he defeated the top seed, Fritz, in the final to lift the title.

The top-ranked American, Fritz, reached the fourth round in Melbourne, where he lost to Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. He then lost the Dallas Open Championship match to Shelton and then lost to eventual runner-up Paul at the Delray Beach Open. However, Fritz is the only American since 2001 to win the Indian Wells, which he did in 2022, defeating the 22-time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal.

Paul suffered a disappointing first-round exit at the Brisbane International against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard before heading to Adelaide, where he reached the semifinals, losing to Tomáš Macháč. At the Australian Open, he bowed out against the eventual winner, Carlos Alcaraz, followed by a second match exit at Dallas. However, he reached the championship match at the Delray Beach, losing to fellow American Sebastian Korda, before coming to Indian Wells.

After early exits in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Dallas, Tiafoe reached the quarterfinals at Delray Beach, losing to fellow American Learner Tien. He then stunned his opponents to reach the final of the Mexican Open, where he lost to the fifth seed, Flavio Cobolli, in straight sets.

All four Americans have shown promising form before coming to their home tournament in Indian Wells. If they keep up the momentum and continue to deliver such high-level performances when the main draw kicks off, all four can make deep runs at Tennis Paradise, possibly even lifting the title.
