The 2026 BNP Paribas Open is all set to begin from March with the world’s best players ready to compete for one of the most coveted trophies in the sport, apart from the Grand Slams. On the men’s side, the entire draw is set up to stop Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed and world’s top-ranked player, from capturing a third title in the Californian desert.
Carlos Alcaraz And Novak Djokovic Set for A Semifinal Clash at Indian Wells
Following their Australian Open final last month, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are once more on a collision course, this time for a potential semifinal at Indian Wells. Alcaraz has been in tremendous form, winning all 12 of his matches this year, and will begin his campaign with a second-round clash against either Terence Atmane or Grigor Dimitrov.
Ideally, facing Dimitrov in the second round might have been a tough draw, but given the Spaniard’s form and the fact that the Bulgarian has looked far from his best after his injury comeback, the top seed should not have any trouble progressing through.
Alcaraz’s potential seeded opponents in the next couple of rounds might include Arthur Rinderknech in the third round and either Valentin Vacherot or Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals. The top seed has yet to face the Monegasque player, but has won 10 of the 11 matches he has played collectively against Rinderknech and Ruud, with the only loss coming at the hands of the Norwegian at the 2024 ATP Finals.
Alcaraz’s potential quarterfinal opponents include the trio of Alex de Minaur, Alexander Bublik, and Cameron Norrie. Alcaraz has not faced Bublik yet and has never lost to De Minaur in six meetings. Ironically, it might be Norrie who might give the Spaniard a bit of a test, should the Brit make it to the quarterfinals himself. He has won 3 out of the 8 matches he has played against Alcaraz, and is a former champion at Indian Wells.
On the other hand, Djokovic could start his Indian Wells campaign with a second-round clash against big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. However, given the deficiencies
in Perricard’s return games, Djokovic should not have any trouble reaching the next round. He might face either Hubert Hurkacz or Corentin Moutet in the third round, but Djokovic has a 100 percent win record across 11 matches against them and should progress to the next round.
The Serb’s first major challenge will be a potential fourth-round meeting against defending champion Jack Draper. The two of them have met only once, with the Serb winning against the Brit at the 2021 Wimbledon in a four-set contest. Draper is returning after an injury, so his form remains to be seen, but if he is anywhere near his best, that match promises to be a blockbuster.
If Djokovic does get past Draper, his potential quarterfinal opponent might be one of Daniil Medvedev, Learner Tien, or home favorite and 2022 champion, Taylor Fritz. From a matcup standpoint, the third seed would be in a favorable position, having beaten Tien in their only match at the US Open last year, having not lost to Fritz in 11 attempts, and having won 10 of the 15 matches he has played against Medvedev.
However, if Medvedev reaches the quarterfinals, the match might be a close one, as the Russian has found some form back, already winning two titles this season.
Given his current form, it will be a huge upset if Alcaraz does not reach the semifinals. On the other hand, this will be Djokovic’s first event since the Australian Open, and if he is rusty in the early rounds, players like Draper might beat him. Should Alcaraz and Djokovic meet, the Spaniard will be the favorite to win the potential semifinal.
Jannik Sinner Will Look To Bounce Back After A Disappointing Start To The Season
The 2026 season has not begun well for Jannik Sinner, as he lost to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals and then suffered an unexpected quarterfinal loss to Jakub MenÅ¡Ãk at the Qatar Open. The Italian will be keen to gain lost ground at Indian Wells, where he will potentially begin his campaign against James Duckworth in the second round, which should not be a challenge for the Italian.
His possible seeded opponents in the next couple of rounds might include Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Tommy Paul, and or Karen Khachanov. He has won both his matches against Etchverry and has an identical 4-1 head-to-head record against both Paul and Khachanov.
Once in the quarterfinals, the potential opponent for Sinner would be Ben Shelton. This has been another lopsided matchup for the Italian, as he has won 9 of the 10 matches against the American, including their most recent meeting at the Australian Open this year.
Sinner might face MenÅ¡Ãk again in the quarterfinals, should the Czech player reach that stage. The Italian’s most likely opponent in the semifinals would be Alexander Zverev, against whom he has won 6 of his 10 matches, including his last 5.
Given his form, Sinner might face a few tricky challenges on his route to the final, especially in the potential quarterfinal match against MenÅ¡Ãk, should the two meet. The whole tennis world is waiting for the first Alcaraz-Sinner clash of 2026, and should that happen at Indian Wells, the Spaniard will be the favorite as he has the head-to-head advantage and has a tremendous record at Indian Wells.
