The college basketball world reacted to the heated exchange between Florida coach Todd Golden and Arkansas’ John Calipari in the second half of the Gators’ 111-77 win on Saturday night at Stephen O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Florida.
Both coaches received technical fouls, but the exchange only heightened the intensity of the showdown, whether in the SEC Tournament or the NCAA Tournament if they meet again.

Golden and Calipari screamed at each other near mid-court when Florida led 59-36 early in the second half. The exchange stemmed from a flagrant foul on Florida’s Rueben Chinyelu. Calipari’s assistants pulled him away, while Golden turned and riled up the 11,000-plus in attendance. Both coaches received technical fouls.

The incident prompted college basketball experts and fans to comment on the scene. One of the best reactions during the exchange came from 247 Sports’ Brett Greenberg, who said it was the only highlight in the game, aside from Florida beating up Arkansas.
“Holy s*** double technicals for Todd Golden & John Calipari … This is ELECTRIC,” Greenberg said.

Barstool Sports blogger Bobby Reagan reacted to the scene, asking whether the two coaches were about to fight. “Calipari and Golden about to fight?,” Reagan wrote.
Kentucky Sports Radio host Matt Jones also posted the heated exchange between former Kentucky coach and current Arkansas chief tactician Calipari and Florida’s Golden, commenting: “This is an amazing sequence with Calipari and Golden.”
Sports Illustrated senior writer Pat Forde called this a “whoa baby” moment, noting that Golden is calm while Calipari is a respectable coach. “Calipari and Golden F-bombing each other along the sidelines, whoa baby,” Forde said.
Field of 68 co-founder Jeff Goodman also reacted to the heated exchange, noting that both coaches had one title each. “Todd Golden going up against John Calipari now. Still kinda crazy that they have the same number of national titles,” Goodman noted.
CBS Sports college basketball insider Jon Rothstein posted a tweet summarizing Calipari’s loss to the Gators. “Florida’s 34-point win over Arkansas ties John Calipari’s worst loss as a head coach,” Rothstein opined.
With the win, the Gators have won six straight against ranked teams and have scored at least 90 points in each of those games. It is the second-longest such streak in college basketball history. The longest mark is shared by UNLV and Loyola-Marymount, both from the 1989-90 season, according to ESPN.
No. 7 Florida (23-6, 14-2 SEC) will host Mississippi State (13-16, 5-11 SEC) on Tuesday, while No. 20 Arkansas (21-8, 11-5 SEC) will face Texas (18-11, 9-7 SEC) on Wednesday.
