The Mérida Open semifinal between Cristina Bucșa and Jasmine Paolini ended emotionally for both players for different reasons. To secure a berth in the championship match, the Spaniard needed to do something she had never achieved in her career: a win against a WTA Top 10.
However, not only did she overcome the mammoth challenge, but she also shared it with her father on a very special day, leading to an emotional moment courtside.
Cristina Bucșa Enjoys a Special Moment with Father After Upsetting Jasmine Paolini in Mérida Open SF
Bucșa stepped onto the stadium court for the Mérida Open semifinals against Paolini with a massive personal motivation. Before the match began, she had a tough 0-10 record against top-10-ranked players on the tour. On top of that, she had never even managed to win a single set in any of those previous encounters, having a 0-20 record in sets.
However, Saturday’s match carried significance because it was her father’s birthday, and Bucșa had promised him she would finally break her losing streak and secure her first top-10 victory as his direct birthday gift. This was what fueled the Spaniard ahead of the match and motivated her to deliver one of the best performances of her career.
She secured a stunning 7-5, 6-4 straight-sets win, securing her first top-10 win exactly on her father’s birthday, creating an unforgettable moment for the rising tennis star. This achievement immediately led to an incredibly touching scene at the stadium involving her father.
Right after winning the match point, an emotional Bucșa walked straight to the stands. She immediately found her father and shared a beautiful, emotional courtside hug.

Fans in the arena cheered loudly as the two shared a special family moment. The joy of achieving a milestone victory while delivering on a heartfelt birthday promise made the semifinal win even more heartwarming.
With this massive 7-5, 6-4 upset, she broke her 0-10 record against top-10 opponents, sending her straight into the prestigious WTA 500 final.
Bucșa’s Champion Performance Against a Struggling Paolini
The match was dramatic from the beginning, but Bucșa didn’t let her emotions get the better of her under pressure. In the first set, she broke the Italian twice to a massive 5-2 lead. However, Paolini broke her opponent twice immediately to level the set at 5-5, but the Spaniard stayed calm to take the set 7-5.
The second set opened similarly, with Bucșa racing to a 4-0 advantage before closing it out at 6-4. Even though Paolini was more accurate with her serves, landing 71% of her first serves as compared to 62% of the Spaniard’s, Bucșa managed to win more points on those serves, creating the difference. She also won more service games (8/11) and more return games (5/11) as compared to the Italian’s (6/11 and 3/11).
On the other side of the court, Paolini’s performance highlighted a concerning period of form, as she struggled to find her rhythm and consistency. In the quarterfinals against Katie Boulter, she suffered a terrible opening set, losing 0-6 in under half an hour, before mounting a comeback and winning.
Paolini opened her 2026 campaign in Melbourne, where she lost against the American teenager Iva Jovic in the third round. She then went to the Middle East, where she lost to Maria Sakkari in her first match in Doha and to Alexandra Eala in the first match of the Dubai Tennis Championships, marking a disappointing swing.
Now the Italian heads to Tennis Paradise to compete at one of the most prestigious tournaments in the entire world, the WTA 1000 BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
