The Chinese player has impressively advanced to the quarterfinal round of the Mérida Open Akron after defeating the defending champion, World No. 20 Emma Navarro, in the round of 16. After the win, she expressed her thoughts on her significant victory, a promising result in the singles category following her semifinal run at her homeland’s 2025 Guangzhou Open.

The World No. 86 in singles and World No. 12 in doubles delivered notable performances, defeating Katarzyna Piter and Martina Trevisan in the qualifying rounds in straight sets. She then surpassed Varvara Lepchenko in the round of 32, with a concluding score of 6-2, 6-1, and then overcame Navarro with a final scoreline of 6-4, 6-4, leading their head-to-head with 3-0.
After securing the win, Zhang Shuai reflected on her thoughts on how she was able to surpass the American star, mentioning, “I don’t really know because during the match I was thinking the same question. I didn’t do anything special.”
She continued highlighting her physical and mental strength, “Maybe I like (how she hits) her balls and she doesn’t like my balls. Yeah, I don’t really know, but I just played my game, tried to focus on myself and that was a great match, 4-1 down and 3-1 down in the second set.”
Shuai had begun her 2026 season with the Brisbane International, where she reached the round of 32, facing defeat from World No. 3, Elena Rybakina. In the doubles category, she competed with Liudmila Samsonova. Shen then competed in the Adelaide International, losing in the qualifying round to Kamilla Rakhimova, and went on to win the doubles title with Kateřina Siniaková.
At the Australian Open, she competed in three categories: singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. In women’s singles, she lost in the first round to Taylah Preston, then won the doubles title with Elise Mertens, defeating Aleksandra Krunić and Anna Danilina in the final. In the mixed doubles with her partner Tim Pütz, she reached the second round.

She commenced her Middle East Swing with the Abu Dhabi Open with her partner, a former World No. 50, Cristina Bucșa, and reached the quarterfinal round, losing to Alexandra Eala and Janice Tjen in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
At the Qatar Open, she lost in the qualifying round to Vera Zvonareva; at the Dubai Tennis Championship, she lost in the qualifying round to Hailey Baptiste; and in doubles with Elise Mertens, she lost the round of 16 to Giuliana Olmos and Jessica Pegula. In the quarterfinals in Mérida, Mexico, Shuai is all set to clash with the Andorran player, World No. 122, Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva.
