Team USA Champ Pinpoints What Led to Downfall of Connor McDavid-Powered Team Canada in Gold Medal Game

Matthew and Brady Tkachuk explain what may have caused an extremely talented Team Canada's downfall.

Jack Hughes’ cinematic goal in overtime poured cold water over Sidney Crosby’s aspirations for a third Olympic gold medal. Sooner than Hughes maneuvered the puck to get the better of Jordan Binnington and sealed the deal for his team, fans of the United States Hockey Team erupted in joy.

The Men’s Hockey Team had successfully suppressed a group boasting some of the NHL’s best offensive talent. Team USA stars have advanced an explanation for what gave them the upper hand vis-à-vis Canada.

Tkachuk Brothers Weigh in on Why Team Canada’s Efforts Fell Short at the Gold Medal Game

Both the United States and Canada faced stiff competition from their opponents in the playoff games leading up to the showdown on February 22. The anticipation that had the community by its grip finally culminated in the gold medal game. Team Canada was playing for the country and for Captain Crosby, who had failed to show up for the team in the semifinal and final after taking two brutal hits from Czechia defenseman Radko Gudas during the exhilarating quarterfinal game.

Despite Team Canada being stacked with talent, the Tkachuk brothers believe it was the United States’ camaraderie and team spirit that ultimately yielded results. According to Matthew, every Canadian player just wanted to make a statement for himself.

“I think their team, they almost pressed too much together. Each guy wanted to be “The Guy” so much. Like, obviously, you want to be the guy. It was like every time they took it, it was one-on-one. They tried to take guys one-on-one. McDavid tried to take on Jack knowing he is a forward playing defence,” the winger stated in the latest episode of the “Wingmen” podcast.

The Tkachuks attribute the team’s win to the efforts of every player, but especially Hughes and goalie Connor Hellebuyck. The brothers believe that Hughes’ overtime goal, assisted by defenseman Zach Werenski and Hellebuyck, is undoubtedly deserving of the honour of being the best goal of this generation.

“And Jack has an unreal stab, beats Makar on the stab. And then Wierenski beats MacKinnon on the stab, sets up Jack. And then the biggest goal of our generation right there. There’s no way the greatest goal of our generation, that’s what it was. I’m like, Jack, you meant to go there, right? He’s like, yeah, come on, come on. So awesome,” the brothers animatedly discussed on the podcast, looking back on Hughes’ winning goal.

Team USA Men’s Hockey’s win was followed by celebrations that have not been entirely uncontroversial. Still, aside from that, hockey fans can agree that the team came together and created history at Milano-Cortina.
