During the divisional-round win over the San Francisco 49ers in the postseason, the Seattle Seahawks running back Zach Charbonnet suffered a torn ACL. After the injury on Jan. 16, 2026, the promising young back was forced to leave the field as concerns about the severity of the setback quickly grew.

Now, as the Seahawks star begins the long road to recovery, Charbonnet shared a heartfelt message from his hospital bed following successful ACL surgery.

Seahawks RB Zach Charbonnet Breaks Silence After Season-Ending ACL Surgery

In a message shared shortly after undergoing ACL surgery, Charbonnet turned to faith while addressing the difficult moment in his career. Posting from his hospital bed, the Seahawks running back wrote, “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 1 Peter 5:10” as he begins the demanding road back to full health.

Now that he has undergone the much-needed surgery, the next question on everyone’s mind is simple. When can Charbonnet realistically make his return during the 2026 NFL season?

An ACL tear is one of those injuries where the calendar matters just as much as the surgery itself. In general, the recovery timeline after ACL reconstruction ranges anywhere from 9 to 12 months before an athlete can safely return to full-contact football activities.

The early phase typically focuses on reducing swelling and regaining range of motion, while the next several months are spent rebuilding the player’s strength and his knee stability through progressive rehab.

Realistically, even if everything in Charbonnet’s recovery goes according to plan with no setbacks, a return before the midway point of the 2026 NFL season would be considered aggressive. The Seahawks ranked ninth in PFSN’s Player Offensive Impact Rankings metric.

Most running backs are brought along cautiously, given the demands of cutting and explosive movement at the position, which means a late-season return or a gradual ramp-up toward the back half of the schedule appears to be the more reasonable expectation.

But despite the offseason injury setback, Charbonnet had quietly put together a productive 2025 regular season before going down. The Seahawks running back recorded 184 carries for 730 rushing yards and a team-leading 12 touchdowns, while also adding 144 receiving yards through the air.

However, for those wondering whether the 25-year-old running back could be a potential trade candidate, it may be worth holding off on that speculation for now. Charbonnet is currently playing under his rookie contract with the Seahawks.

He signed a four-year, $6,876,079 deal with the team in July 2023 that included a $2,000,784 signing bonus and $3,813,333 in guaranteed money. The contract runs through the 2026 NFL season, meaning he is still under team control for the upcoming year.

For the 2026 season specifically, Charbonnet is set to earn a base salary of $1,687,647 while carrying a cap hit of just over $2.1 million. It makes him a relatively low-cost piece in the Seahawks’ backfield heading into the final year of his rookie deal. Unless an extension is agreed upon, he is scheduled to become a free agent after the 2026 season.
