Connor Hellebuyck played the most important role in the United States’ gold win on Sunday. The Winnipeg Jets goaltender made 41 saves in a 2-1 overtime win against Canada. His effort helped the U.S. secure its first Olympic gold medal in 46 years and close out a tough game against a high-scoring opponent.
After the game, Old Row Sports posted an image of Hellebuyck and wrote, “Connor Hellebuyck – Secretary of Defense.”
U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth reshared the post and added his own comment. He wrote, “Agreed. 🇺🇸 Now we have a Secretary of War…and a Secretary of Defense!”
Canada controlled parts of the game, especially in the second period, but Hellebuyck stayed focused and made key stops. He faced 19 shots in that period alone and kept the score close when Canada pushed for control.
Hellebuyck’s work across the tournament also earned him Best Goaltender honors, finishing with a 5-0-0 record and a .956 save percentage. He also posted a 1.18 goals-against average, which ranked among the best in the tournament.
One moment in the third period stood out. Defenseman Devon Toews found space in front of the net with a clear chance to score. Hellebuyck reached back with his stick and stopped the shot, even though he was facing the other direction. The save kept the game tied and gave the U.S. a chance to respond later in the period.

Canada continued to press, but several chances went unanswered as the pressure increased late in the game. The United States then won in overtime to secure the gold medal. Forward Matt Boldy had opened the scoring in the first period, while Canada tied the game late in the second with a goal from Cale Makar. But Hellebuyck was never loose after that.
