With Sidney Crosby out because of injury, Connor McDavid once again took on the captain’s role for the gold medal game. Canada may have come up just short, but McDavid’s performance didn’t go unnoticed.
The Oilers star was named the tournament’s MVP and Best Forward, and he also secured a place on the Olympic All-Star Team after leading the competition in scoring with 13 points, two goals, and 11 assists.

That total set a new Olympic record for an NHL player at the Winter Games, surpassing the previous mark of 11 points shared by Finnish legends Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu.
It was a bittersweet achievement for McDavid. He added a silver medal to his résumé, but the ultimate prize slipped away in overtime.

Matt Boldy opened the scoring for Team USA just six minutes in with a dazzling solo effort. The Americans carried that lead deep into the second period before Cale Makar tied it, beating Connor Hellebuyck with a perfectly placed shot.
From there, both teams traded chances in a tense third period before heading into 3-on-3 overtime.
Just 1:41 into the extra frame, Jack Hughes buried the winner, sending the American bench into celebration and securing the 2-1 OT victory.
Hellebuyck was outstanding in goal, stopping 41 Canadian shots and earning Best Goaltender honors for the tournament. Quinn Hughes was named Best Defenseman after a strong all-around performance throughout the Games.
