‘It’s Unbelievable’ — Auston Matthews Flashes a Grin After Slaying Team Canada in Winter Olympics

Auston Matthews left searching for words after Team USA's phenomenal win over Team Canada to win gold at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics.

While Team Canada had embarked on its journey in Italy on a high note, all its dreams came to a screeching halt in the showdown against the USA. Auston Matthews and company emerged victorious in overtime, winning the gold, while Canada had to settle for the silver begrudgingly.

With that, the exhilarating campaign at Milan-Cortina has come to an end, and Matthews can barely contain his ecstasy while basking in the warmth of the United States’ phenomenal success.

Auston Matthews Over the Moon as Team USA Emerges Victorious

Every player who was handpicked to represent their country in Italy held the Olympic campaign close to their hearts, but for Matthews, it meant something more. While Sidney Crosby’s Captaincy was unanimously accepted, questions arose about Matthews’ fit as Team USA’s Captain. Of course, his inability to deliver the desired results at the 4 Nations Face-Off exacerbated doubts.

Matthews was aware that leading the USA to Olympic gold could be the tipping point in changing the discussion surrounding his leadership abilities. His team delivered and successfully suppressed Team Canada, which was already struggling to come to terms with Crosby’s absence. Canada boasted some of the best offensive players in the NHL, yet couldn’t prevail in the end.

Now that some qualms about his ability to lead a team to a winning end have finally been alleviated, Matthews can breathe a sigh of relief. The Captain was elated and could barely rein in his emotions as he tried to verbalize what the win meant to him. “It’s so special. It’s just a feeling, playing for your country and doing it in this kind of fashion. I mean, I don’t even know what to say. It’s unbelievable. It’s so special. I don’t even know.”

The win must also mean the world to Jack Hughes. Hughes was also motivated by an urge to win and prove himself anew. Given the New Jersey Devils’ sorry 2025-26 season, Hughes had to give it his all at the Olympics to show that he is still a force to be reckoned with. With his golden goal that landed the United States Men’s Hockey Team its first Olympic gold medal since 1980, the Devils forward has been cast in an entirely different light.

While Crosby’s plans to land a third Olympic gold medal have been brutally cut short, there is little time to mourn Canada’s defeat. It is only a matter of time before the NHL action resumes.
