Former Miami quarterback Carson Beck redeemed himself in his final season of college football by leading the Hurricanes to the national championship game. Despite the narrow loss to the Indiana Hoosiers, Beck boosted his draft stock that had tanked after an inconsistent season under center for the Georgia Bulldogs in 2024.
The 2026 NFL Draft class is light on quarterback talent, with the first QB off the board widely expected to be former Indiana Hoosiers star Fernando Mendoza, leaving the QB2 race wide open.
Urban Meyer Raises Carson Beck Concern Ahead of Draft
During Wednesday’s segment of “The Triple Option” podcast, former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer praised Beck’s physicality, but highlighted the quarterback’s biggest weakness.
“He’s a giant. I didn’t like the fact that over his career, he just turns the ball over. I loved the game against Ole Miss. I loved how he improved,” Meyer said. “But just standing there watching him as a former recruiter and coach, I was blown away by how big he was, how his body looked great, and he finished strong.”
“But quarterbacks who turn the ball over are a liability. I’ve had really great quarterbacks. There have been a couple of times when you just don’t trust it. You are paralyzed as a play caller, as a head coach. Because you can’t really go win the game.”
Beck’s final season in Athens was littered with mistakes after he accounted for 12 interceptions in crucial games. He started last season in Coral Gables on fire, but accounted for six interceptions in a stretch of three games, including the Hurricanes’ losses to the Louisville Cardinals and SMU Mustangs.
Beck’s college football career also ended with a heart-wrenching interception in the national championship game against Indiana, which cost the Hurricanes a chance to tie the game.
Beck Gets Harsh Draft Projection
Beck has always been a polarizing prospect, and Fox Sports draft guru Rob Rang predicted that the former Miami quarterback would fall to Day Three and would be the No. 9 QB off the board in the class of 2026.
“For a quarterback of his experience, however, Beck also shows a disturbing lack of poise in critical moments,” Rang wrote. “In my opinion, his game-sealing interception was more of an instinctive play by Indiana cornerback Jamari Sharpe than a poor read or inaccurate throw by Beck.
“Regardless, it was a missed opportunity by the quarterback to boost his stock. Instead, it probably leaves him still waiting to hear his name called until Day 3.”
Beck earned a PFSN College QB Impact score of 83.3 after tallying 3,813 passing yards, resulting in 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, while adding 43 rushing yards and 2 scores for the Hurricanes last season.
