Frances Tiafoe made a strong start to his campaign at the Delray Beach Open, but it wasn’t just his performance that drew attention. In a bizarre mid-match moment, the chair umpire was seen covering the American’s sponsor patch on his jersey, leaving both Tiafoe and the crowd puzzled. The unexpected move quickly sparked curiosity, though a specific regulation prompted the official to take action.
Umpire Erases Frances Tiafoe’s Sponsor’s Logo for One Major Reason
Tiafoe, the eighth seed at the ATP 250 event, took on Australia’s Rinky Hijikata in the opening round. The American faced little resistance and sealed a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 victory to book his place in the second round of the tournament.
One of the most striking moments of the match unfolded when the chair umpire walked up to Tiafoe holding a black marker.
In a surprising turn, the official proceeded to black out the Barclays logo displayed on the top right side of Tiafoe’s sleeveless jersey.
For context, the 28-year-old has served as an Official Tennis Ambassador for Barclays since 2023, making the mid-match decision all the more attention-grabbing.
Subsequently, Frances Tiafoe shook his head in visible disbelief before offering a wry smile as the umpire continued to run the marker across the logo.

Under ATP regulations, sleeveless tops may have up to 2 logos on the front, provided they comply with size and placement specifications. However, because Frances Tiafoe was competing in a sleeveless top, the placement of multiple logos on the front of his shirt violated the rule.
Alongside Barclays, Tiafoe is also a brand ambassador for Ultimate Kronos Group (UKG), whose logo was positioned directly above the Barclays patch. In addition, his apparel sponsor, Lululemon, was featured on the top left of the jersey, resulting in excessive front-facing branding.
Nonetheless, Frances Tiafoe will need to quickly redirect his attention to the remainder of the tournament as he looks to reverse what has been a largely underwhelming start to the season.
The 28-year-old opened his campaign at the Brisbane International, where his run ended in the second round against Daniil Medvedev. He showed slight improvement at the Australian Open but exited in the third round, a result that still fell short of expectations.
His struggles persisted at the Dallas Open, where he suffered another second-round defeat. Currently holding a 5–3 win-loss record, Tiafoe will be aiming to build momentum and regain consistency at Delray Beach.
