Arkansas vs. LSU Prediction and Preview

Arkansas is in the thick of the race for the SEC regular season title, as the Razorbacks share third place with Texas A&M (17-6) at 7-3. They are half-a-game behind No. 25 Kentucky (17-7, 8-3) and a full-game back of No. 14 Florida (17-6, 8-2).

With still eight games remaining in the conference regular season, a lot can still happen, and John Calipari’s team has a significant chance of claiming the title if it wins its upcoming matches.

Arkansas started the second half of the SEC regular season on a bright note, beating Mississippi State 88-68 at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville, Mississippi. Darius Acuff Jr. led the Razorbacks’ offense with 24 points on 9 of 19 shooting from the field, including 3 of 5 from 3-pointers, as he continues his excellent freshman run under Calipari’s guidance.

Acuff was also excellent as a playmaker for Arkansas, dishing off eight assists and hauling down five rebounds in an all-around effort that raises his NBA draft stock by several notches.

Trevon Brazile added 19 points, eight rebounds, four assists, and four blocks while Meleek Thomas and Billy Richmond added 17 and 14, respectively, for the Razorbacks, who shot 52% from the field and 36% from the 3-point line.

On the other hand, LSU is coming off an 83-71 loss to Georgia for its fourth defeat in five games. The Tigers spoiled Mackinnon’s 26-point outburst, as Matt McMahon’s team marched on without leading scorer Dedan Thomas. Marquel Sutton added 14 points as no other LSU player scored in double figures in that loss.

The rest of the Tigers team went 12 of 31 against the Bulldogs and were 5 of 23 from the 3-point line in that loss. Over the last 10 games, LSU is 2-8, averaging 73.6 points per game while shooting 44.7% from the field. Their defense has been a problem in that stretch, allowing opponents to score 79.6 ppg.

Arkansas beat LSU 85-81 in their first meeting three weeks ago at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville. Acuff scored 24 of his 31 points in the second half to help the Razorbacks rally and beat the Tigers. With Arkansas down 59-56, the freshman scored 12 of the Razorbacks’ 15 points to take a 71-67 lead.

Arkansas leads the all-time series 45-37, with the Razorbacks going 7-3 in the last 10 meetings. However, LSU leads 22-13 in games played in Baton Rouge.

The Razorbacks hold a manpower advantage over the Tigers, as Dedan Thomas remains out due to a foot injury. But that does not mean LSU will just roll over and give up to Arkansas.

With the game emanating from the PMAC, Matt McMahon’s team would have a distinct advantage against its SEC foes. However, the Darius Acuff-Meleek Thomas tandem for the Razorbacks could bring a lot of trouble for the Tigers without Dedan Thomas.

Prediction: Arkansas 76, LSU 71
