Clippers President Lawrence Frank Sets the Record Straight on Tyronn Lue’s Future in Los Angeles

Clippers president Lawrence Frank publicly backs Tyronn Lue after a rough start to the season. Here's what he said.

Tyronn Lue, the head coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, has spent much of this season under a microscope. Clippers president Lawrence Frank has now stepped in to address the noise head-on and clarified the front office’s stance on Lue’s position as the head coach.

Clippers President Makes Feelings Clear on Head Coach Tyronn Lue

The Clippers opened the year in rough shape, struggling to find consistency and stacking up losses at an alarming rate. Long losing streaks dropped the team to 6–21, leaving it near the bottom of the standings and searching for answers.

As often happens in the NBA, attention quickly turned to the head coach, and Lue absorbed much of the criticism as the losses mounted. The pressure only grew louder in December following Chris Paul’s exit from the team.

Soon after, rumors began circulating that there was tension between Paul and Lue, with reports suggesting the two had not spoken in weeks. The situation created even more noise around the team during an already difficult stretch. But President Lawrence has now set the record straight.

As reported by Clippers beat writer Law Murray, Frank strongly backed Lue and dismissed any talk about his job being in danger. Frank emphasized that the organization remains fully committed to Lue and views him as a long-term piece of the franchise. He made it clear that the Clippers plan to work through challenges together rather than point fingers when things get tough.

“T. Lue is gonna be here a long, long time. And when we had the presser after when we were talking about the CP decision, and there were questions… no. Through the good and the bad. We’re gonna work through all this together, and he’s been a great partner.”

Lue’s connection to the Clippers goes back years. He first joined the organization as an assistant coach during the 2013–14 season, then returned in August 2019.

After spending one season on the bench, he was promoted to head coach in October 2020. This season marks his sixth year leading the team and his fifth full season in the role.

His experience carries real weight. Lue won two NBA championships as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers and later captured another title as a head coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside LeBron James.

That run made him the first rookie head coach to win an NBA championship. Throughout his coaching career, Lue has compiled a strong 259-193 overall record, demonstrating he knows how to guide teams through pressure-filled moments. Back in May 2024, he signed a reportedly $70 million five-year extension that runs through the 2028-29 season.

On the court, the Clippers have begun to steady themselves. A strong 15–3 stretch in the middle of the season helped pull them back into the playoff picture after their brutal start. More recently, back-to-back wins over the Sacramento Kings and Minnesota Timberwolves pushed their record to 25–27, placing them ninth in the Western Conference and firmly in the hunt.

The front office has also made it clear it is thinking long-term. Los Angeles moved on from 11-time All-Star James Harden in a deal that brought in Darius Garland and a second-round pick, signaling a shift toward younger talent and future flexibility rather than short-term fixes.

With public backing from Lawrence Frank and clearer direction from the organization, Lue appears to be on solid ground. The confidence shown in him may allow Lue to coach with more freedom as the Clippers continue their push to turn a turbulent season into a successful one.
