Clemson coach Dabo Swinney has continued to draw both support and criticism following his fiery rant in January aimed at Ole Miss coach Pete Golding over alleged tampering with one of his players. Former California Golden Bears linebacker Luke Ferrelli joined Swinney’s Tigers via the transfer portal on Jan. 7 before re-entering the portal and signing with Golding’s Rebels.
The NCAA opened an investigation into the matter after Swinney’s rant ignited debate across the college football world.
Steve Spurrier Delivers Message to Dabo Swinney Over Ole Miss Situation
During a Zoom call with reporters ahead of his induction into the South Carolina Hall of Fame on Monday, former Florida coach Steve Spurrier offered a lighthearted reality check to Swinney regarding his tampering claims.
“I thought by now somebody would have told Dabo, ‘Dabo, they ain’t no rules anymore,'” Spurrier said. “There are (rules) still on the books back there, I guess that you can’t do after this date or that date. Gosh, basketball, they’ve got pros coming back to play college there.
“So I don’t know if they’re gonna ever enforce any rules now or not, but I think Dabo has learned now that he’s got to start paying his players just like everybody is or get left behind. Anyway, you can complain, but I don’t know how good it’s going to do. Somebody tell Dabo, ‘There’s no rules now.'”

Swinney’s public criticism of Golding over the alleged tampering with Ferrelli has continued to divide fans and analysts, with some arguing it is simply the cost of doing business in the era of unlimited transfers and NIL.
Analyst Sides With Swinney Over Tampering Claims
During last week’s segment of the “Joel Klatt Show,” Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt sided with Swinney on the issue, while criticizing other college football coaches for thriving in what he described as a permissive environment.
“I think Dabo is exactly right. You can say, ‘Hey, this is Dabo crying over spilt milk.’ You might be right… Dabo is absolutely right,” Klatt said. “We need more guys like Dabo to step forward and say, ‘Govern us.’ Like Pete Golding needs to raise his hand and say, ‘Govern us.’ Mario Cristobal needs to step forward and say, ‘Govern us.’
“Do you know why those two won’t want to do that? Because they’re succeeding in this model without governance. They’re succeeding in the model without penalty, because they’re willing to do it.”
Swinney has long resisted heavy use of the transfer portal, preferring to develop his roster from high school recruits into veteran contributors. From 2022 to 2025, the Tigers signed just five players through the portal. However, Swinney shifted course in January, adding 11 players during the most recent transfer window.
