Could Derek Carr Return To The NFL In 2026?

At the time, Carr was dealing with a labral tear in his shoulder and damage to his rotator cuff. The situation helped the New Orleans Saints, who eased their cap situation while also giving Tyler Shough a better chance to excel in his starts late in the season.

One year removed from his shoulder surgery, a comeback is not completely out of the question. According to a report from NFL Network’s “The Insiders”, while he’s not actively trying to return, the possibility can’t be 100% discarded.

“Carr doesn’t seem to be actively chasing a return to the NFL. He’s indicated he has enjoyed spending time with family and taking on various projects. But he surely knows the interest is there and sources have said the right situation and coaching staff could lure Carr back onto the field.”

Carr, a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, spent most of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders before a two-year stint in New Orleans. Despite putting up solid numbers for many years, Carr ended his career with no playoff wins; in his best season, 2016, he suffered a broken leg two weeks before the postseason, which was a great year for the Raiders at the time.

His brother, David Carr, was the first overall pick of the 2002 draft by the Houston Texans.

Which Teams Could Try To Sign Carr if He Returns to the NFL?

The report mentions “the right situation and coaching staff”, meaning that he’s not going to accept any situation just for the sake of it. The Saints won’t be interested in his return; they have Shough on the roster, and his development will be a priority in 2026.

A few could use a veteran quarterback. A good example resides in Minnesota. The Vikings have already made it clear that they’ll explore the market for a veteran quarterback in 2026. Kevin O’Connell is one of the brightest offensive minds in the game, and the roster is talented. He won the 2024 AP NFL Coach of the Year. This could be the ideal situation for Carr.

The Saints still retain his rights. But New Orleans is not expected to put any impediments in his way on his return, giving him the freedom to choose a team if the right situation arises.
