There’s a particular hush that falls over a stadium just before the Super Bowl begins. On Sunday, as the 60th edition of the event unfolds in Santa Clara, that pause will belong to Charlie Puth. Before the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots reignite their rivalry on the field, Puth will deliver “The Star-Spangled Banner” to open the night.
Get to Know Charlie Puth, Super Bowl 60’s National Anthem Singer
Charlie Puth’s career has been a blend of precision and heart. He is a pop star with perfect pitch and a producer’s sensibility, and he still writes songs as if he is discovering himself in real time. Born Charles Otto Puth in Rumson, New Jersey, the 35-year-old singer, songwriter and record producer was not formed by the pop machine. He built his audience gradually, one YouTube video at a time.
In the early 2010s, Puth uploaded music and comedic content to his channel, Charlie Vlogs. His first original song, “These Are My Sexy Shades,” came out in 2010, followed by “The Otto Tunes,” which went viral.

His growing online presence eventually caught Ellen DeGeneres’ attention, and she invited him to perform on her show in 2011. From there, Puth continued releasing music independently, including his 2013 single “Ego,” before signing with Atlantic Records. His 2015 single “Marvin Gaye” reached the Billboard Hot 100, but another release that year changed everything.
“See You Again,” Puth’s collaboration with Wiz Khalifa, was written as a tribute to actor Paul Walker for Furious 7. The song became a cultural moment, topping the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks. It earned three Grammy nominations and later gained renewed meaning when performed in honor of Kobe Bryant.
While “See You Again” remains his most recognizable track, “Attention” is often considered his signature solo hit. The minimalist song peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has surpassed 2.35 billion streams on Spotify.
He also co-wrote and produced “Stay” by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber, a global hit that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He is also behind hits like “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” “Light Switch,” “Left and Right,” and “One Call Away.”
Regarding his performance at the Super Bowl, he said, via en.as.com: “I definitely feel nervous, obviously. This is a very difficult song musically to sing. … It might be the most difficult song to sing, to perform, in terms of range, what’s required, and the power needed at the maximum range. I want them to feel inspired. I want everyone to know that music is such an amazing thing and can change so many people’s lives.”
Puth’s catalog includes the EP “Some Type of Love” (2015), his debut album “Nine Track Mind” (2016) and his third studio album “Charlie” (2022).
