NBA Trade Rumors: LeBron James Might Have Already Decided His Next Team

Before his stint with the Lakers, James was previously with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. And though some view his time in Miami as most successful, many fans cling to his memory in Cleveland.

James — an Akron native himself — returned to Cleveland for a second try in 2014, ultimately leading them to their first title in 2016. And though his move to the Lakers was surprising, many hold out hope for an eventual return to the Cavaliers, especially as he contemplates retirement.

In a recent report by The Athletic, Joe Vardon and Jason Lloyd revealed that a James-Cavs reunion might just become reality.

“LeBron James will be a free agent this summer, and if he chooses to play a 24th NBA season, sources close to him said Cleveland would be an obvious destination. His salary would not be close to the $52.6 million he’s earning now in Los Angeles, but at age 41 he is aware of the market realities facing him if he extends his career,” the report read.

Having said that, James might have to adjust his expectations once he becomes a free agent this offseason. Currently earning a base salary of $52,627,153, the four-time NBA champion might have to accept a pay cut before moving.

This also alludes to his performance this season, which had a slow start due to ongoing sciatica issues. Declining health could ultimately affect James’ unmatched consistency, making reports hint at a smaller role for the future Hall of Famer.

James Is Expected to Finish the Season in LA

Despite multiple rumors about a potential move before the NBA Trade Deadline on Thursday, Feb. 5, James is expected to finish his season in LA.

In a recent article, ESPN’s NBA insider Dave McMenamin spoke about James’ future as he said, “With the NBA trade deadline approaching and several teams considered to be potential future destinations for LeBron James reportedly involved in talks to acquire star-level talent, James is still expected to finish out the season with the Los Angeles Lakers.”

With the Lakers at a 30-19 win-loss record in the Western Conference, James is averaging 22 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 6.6 assists while shooting 50.9% from the field.
