The College Football Playoff calendar sparked widespread debate among fans, analysts, and coaches as it clashed with the opening of the transfer portal, influencing both player and coach movement. The playoff was also criticized for the huge interval between the quarterfinals, semifinals, and the championship game.
On Tuesday, the official schedule for the 2026 and 2027 playoff games was released, with a few controversial changes.
College Football Playoff Snub Tradition
In a largely preserved calendar, next season’s playoff will start with the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 30, followed by the Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Peach Bowl on Jan. 1, 2027. Shockingly, there will be no New Year’s Eve game since the NFL will kick off a week later next season, interfering with the traditional playoff game slot due to Thursday night football.
The huge gap between the quarterfinals and the semifinals will continue to be a fortnight, with the Orange Bowl set to be played on Jan. 14 and the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 15. Finally, the national championship game will be played on the latest day that it has ever been played, on Jan. 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
A College Football Playoff game has been a tradition on New Year’s Eve in six of the last 12 years of the playoff format and both of the 12-team formats so far. Its absence in next season’s calendar further highlights the increasing influence that the NFL holds over the college football calendar.
CFP E. D Justifies Playoff Schedule
College Football Playoff executive director Rich Clark justified preserving some of the controversial aspects and making tweaks to the calendar in a statement on Tuesday, after the schedule was released.
“These dates allow us to maintain competitive balance, maximize the fan experience, and provide consistency for everyone involved in the Playoff,” Clark said. “I also want to thank our bowl partners and their local communities for the incredible work, collaboration, and commitment they’ve shown throughout the first two years of the expanded playoff.
“The bowl games and the people behind them embraced change, delivered at the highest level, and helped ensure the expanded format was a success for student-athletes, fans, and the sport.”
The 2027 College Football Playoff quarterfinals will begin with the Sugar Bowl on Dec. 31, 2027=, followed by the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, and the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day. The semifinals will kick off two weeks later with the Orange Bowl on Jan. 13, followed by the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 14 .
Finally, the national championship game will be held on Jan. 24, 2028, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
