Leading up to this year’s trade deadline, Giannis Antetokounmpo remains the top storyline in the NBA. As rumors continue to swirl around the former MVP, one insider dove into a key factor in a potential trade. Last week, news emerged that flipped the league on its side.
After years of Giannis remaining loyal to the franchise that drafted him, Milwaukee is now entertaining trade offers for its homegrown superstar. Seeing that he is still a top player in the league, countless teams have expressed interest in Giannis. However, it remains unclear whether a deal will be reached between now and Thursday afternoon.
NBA insider opens up on focal point of Giannis Antetokounmpo trade talks
During his latest live stream for Bleacher Report, NBA insider Jake Fischer touched on the latest regarding Giannis. He cited a handful of teams as potential suitors, including the New York Knicks, Golden State Warriors, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
When it comes to Giannis being moved, Fischer noted narrative being a driving force. He doesn’t want to see his legacy take a hit, but is adamant on adding accolades to his already impressive resumé.
Looking at the landscape of possible landing spots, Fischer also noted that some teams give Giannis a longer runway to compete for championships than others.
“He is very much focused on the story and the arc of his professional career,” Fischer said of Giannis. “He’s cared about the narrative structure and the characterization of his next situation…
You’re not gonna have a five-year, six-year window competing for championships alongside Steph in Golden State like you theoretically would next to Anthony Edwards in Minnesota. Next to Jalen Brunson in New York, next to Bam Adebayo in Miami.”
If legacy and championships are truly that important to Giannis, Minnesota should be the most interesting team for him. For starters, he’d be joining forces with an emerging superstar who is just getting ready to enter his prime in Anthony Edwards.
More importantly, Edwards gives Giannis arguably the biggest window to contend deep into his thirties.
As far as his career arc goes, Giannis could be the missing piece that finally helps the Timberwolves get over the hump after two conference finals appearances. If he managed to help deliver the franchise its first title alongside Edwards, it would only boost his legacy and standing among the best players of all time.
Rapidly approaching the final 24 hours before the deadline, all eyes will be glued on Giannis and the Bucks to see if his Milwaukee tenure is going to end.
