Senior Bowl MVP Garrett Nussmeier Sends Final Message to LSU As He Drops Hint on NFL Future

Garrett Nussmeier’s Senior Bowl MVP performance reignites his draft stock and delivers a heartfelt message to LSU after a challenging final season.

Garrett Nussmeier’s final appearance in an LSU uniform may have already passed, but his closing statement to the program came on a national stage. The LSU quarterback earned Panini Senior Bowl MVP honors after helping the American team secure a 17–9 victory, a moment that doubled as both a personal milestone and a quiet reset of his professional outlook.

Does Garrett Nussmeier’s Senior Bowl Performance Signal a Healthy Return?

Nussmeier’s stat line at the Senior Bowl did not jump off the page. He completed five of eight passes for 57 yards, threw 1 interception, and added a rushing touchdown. His passer rating finished at 97.4, a figure that exceeded several of his outings during a frustrating LSU season.

The Senior Bowl marked Nussmeier’s first game action in three months after injuries derailed his final collegiate campaign. His arm strength looked intact, his mobility resurfaced, and his comfort in the pocket suggested rock-solid momentum.

“It means a lot. I hadn’t played football in three months,” Nussmeier said. “Getting to be out here again and just be out here with guys and get to play the game I love, it’s an awesome feeling.”

His early rushing touchdown set the tone for the afternoon, followed by a celebratory dance that caught attention on the broadcast. Nussmeier later laughed it off as “the LSU coming out of me,” he said.

He added, “I had to do a dance with some of my boys the last time. So, man, I’m just so blessed, so thankful to God to have this opportunity. I’ve been through a lot in the last six months and so God has gotten me through it and so I wouldn’t be here without him and my relationship with him. So, so blessed, so thankful.”

Nussmeier’s Draft Outlook Shifts as LSU Chapter Closes

Entering the 2025 season, Nussmeier was widely viewed as one of the country’s elite quarterbacks. He drew preseason Heisman Trophy buzz and was mentioned by some analysts as a possible No. 1 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft.

That narrative unraveled as LSU’s offense sputtered and injuries limited his availability, eventually keeping him out of the final three regular-season games and the Texas Bowl against Houston.

The uneven year pushed his draft projection down into the second or third round in many mock drafts. His Senior Bowl week, however, has already begun to reshape that conversation.

The context of his college career also loomed over the week. The Brian Kelly era fell short of expectations by LSU standards, and questions linger about whether Nussmeier’s skill set was maximized. Still, his loyalty to the program remained front and center.

“It means the world to me. LSU will always be home for me, always bleed purple and gold no matter what,” Nussmeier said. “Always rooting for those guys and hopefully, you know, I’ll still always be able to come back home.”

As the son of New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator and former NFL quarterback Doug Nussmeier, Garrett entered college football with a well-known pedigree. Now, with Senior Bowl MVP honors on his resume, he exits LSU with a renewed sense of momentum.
