Carlos Alcaraz’s former coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, recently revealed the message he received from Jannik Sinner’s camp shortly after parting ways with the Spaniard last year. The split sent shockwaves through the tennis world in December, bringing an end to one of the sport’s most successful partnerships, one that guided Alcaraz to six Grand Slam titles.
Carlos Alcaraz’s Ex-Coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Recalls the Message He Received From Jannik Sinner’s Team Following the Shocking Split
Alcaraz announced the split on social media, thanking his long-time coach for his contributions and expressing sadness over the end of their partnership. Furthermore, Ferrero echoed these sentiments in another social media post.
The separation came as a surprise, not least because of the extraordinary success they achieved together. Alcaraz’s association with Ferrero began in 2018, when he joined the former world No. 1’s academy as a teenager. Under Ferrero’s guidance, Alcaraz progressed methodically through the Futures and Challenger circuits before announcing himself on the ATP Tour.
The 22-year-old never looked back and went on to amass 24 tour titles, including six Grand Slams, becoming the youngest world No. 1 in ATP history following his US Open triumph in 2022. Last season alone, he collected eight titles, including two Grand Slams.
Ferrero revisited the split once again after recently revealing the message he received from Jannik Sinner’s camp in the immediate aftermath. Asked in an interview with Clay Tenis about the possibility of coaching the Italian in the future, Ferrero said:
“I meant that doors should not be closed with an absolute no, right? Just as I could return alongside Carlos at some point, who knows? Just as I could coach any other player on the tour, one of them could be Jannik (Sinner).”
Ferrero later explained that Sinner’s camp only sent a message congratulating him on his work and expressing sympathy after the split, emphasizing that there was no further contact or discussion.
“I want to clarify that nobody from Jannik’s team has contacted me, although it is true that they sent me a message congratulating me on the work that had been done and saying they were very sorry. But nothing more, in the end nothing more,” he added.
It is also worth noting that Sinner’s current coach, Darren Cahill, was widely expected to step away from his role last year. However, those plans were changed following a highly successful season highlighted by two Grand Slam titles. Sinner has since indicated openness to extending the partnership, making Ferrero’s potential arrival in the Italian’s camp appear unlikely in the near future.
Reflecting on the split in December last year, Ferrero emphasized that the decision was independent of competitive outcomes and personal issues. He explained that the terms of the proposed renewal did not sit right with him, admitting the timing came as a surprise and that he had not expected a split after the season they had enjoyed.
Ferrero also suggested the move stemmed from a sense of self-respect, pointing to imbalances he had felt in previous agreements.
