Bill Belichick’s first year on the Pro Football Hall of Fame ballot ended in unexpected controversy after he failed to secure election despite an unmatched coaching resume. The fallout extended beyond surprise at the result, triggering a rare public warning from the Hall about potential discipline for selection committee members and reopening long-running debates about how much off-field issues should factor into the process.
That response, tied to the Bill Belichick snub, prompted Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens to revive his long-standing criticism of the selection process and those who oversee it.
Terrell Owens Goes Off on Voters Over Bill Belichick 2026 Hall of Fame Class Snub
Owens, who was finally enshrined in 2018 after being passed over in 2016 and 2017, used the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s latest statement as a reference point to revisit how his own case was handled.
The Hall announced it could consider removing voters if an investigation finds that any member violated selection bylaws during the Belichick deliberations. Owens immediately questioned why that level of accountability was not applied when his candidacy stalled nearly a decade ago.
His initial reaction was directed squarely at the institution: “Hey @ProFootballHOF!!!!,” Owens wrote. “WHERE THE HELL was this when they violated these bylaws when it came to me in 2016 and 2017???!!!! 🤔🤔🤔”

Owens has long argued that selectors held perceived off-field issues and locker room reputation against him despite his statistical dominance at receiver.
He then expanded his criticism to the broader voting body after Yankees legend Reggie Jackson posted on X that leaving Belichick off the first ballot was the “definition of WTF.” Owens quote-posted Jackson and framed the situation as part of a larger power imbalance.
“You’re NOT missing anything Reggie!!,” Owens said. “Just like in the White House, a bunch of idiots given TOO MUCH power and they’re abusing it!! And the more that I’ve thought about it, with Bill’s résumé, accolades and accomplishments, you shouldn’t even need a committee for this one!!! Hey @ProFootballHOF, MAKE THE HALL OF FAME GREAT AGAIN! This ain’t it!!”
Owens’s comments underscore two key points. First, he sees a double standard in the Hall threatening to police voters’ behavior only after a coach of Belichick’s stature was affected. Second, he believes the current system grants a small group of selectors disproportionate influence over careers, and that both his own delay and Belichick’s first-year denial highlight structural flaws that extend beyond a single class.
Why Belichick Was Snubbed By Hall Of Fame Voters
An ESPN report detailed how Belichick’s candidacy unfolded behind closed doors. The six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach did not receive the required 80 percent of votes from the 50-member Selection Committee to be inducted into the Class of 2026.
Multiple sources told ESPN that Spygate and Deflategate, the twin cheating scandals during the Patriots’ championship run, were discussed during deliberations. Those controversies, which resulted in fines, lost draft picks and years of public scrutiny, factored into the evaluation as selectors weighed Belichick’s achievements against the league’s disciplinary history.
The Hall’s announcement this week stated that it reviews the selection process and committee annually and emphasized that “the integrity of this process must be beyond reproach.” It added that any member found to have violated bylaws could face removal.
That warning is what Owens seized upon, questioning why similar scrutiny was not applied when he was left off the ballot in his first two years of eligibility.
For now, Belichick’s candidacy will return to voters in a future cycle.
