Coco Gauff Reaches Australian Open QF, Beating Karolína Muchová in the 4R

Gauff’s 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win over 19th seed Muchová at Margaret Court Arena showed why she is the top player of the most dominant country in women’s tennis. The 21-year-old played nearly perfect tennis in the first set, taking a 5-0 lead in just the first 30 minutes, and closed it out 6-1.

But Muchová fought back in the second set, breaking Gauff’s serve early and taking it 6-3, marking her first set win against the American in their head-to-head meetings.

Gauff came out stronger in the final set and took control again, taking a 4-1 lead, and then wrapping things up at 6-3, marking her third straight quarterfinal appearance in Melbourne. In her post-match press conference, a reporter asked Gauff about the possibility of four Americans in the quarterfinals at the same Grand Slam.

“Yeah, I’m definitely aware of it because you see them every day, and we’re all rooting for each other, and I think it’s cool. I think I was mainly aware of it last year when we were at the WTA finals. I think it was like four out of the eight, if I’m not mistaken, were Americans, and I don’t know what’s in the water, but I think we have a strong tennis identity in the United States. So, I think that it’s just the natural cause to produce great players,” she gave an honest assessment.

She also talked about how seeing your friends doing well at the top level of the sport pushes you to perform better. “And then also, I think when you have friends and people you practice with being at a high level, if you’re not at that level yet, you know that you can reach there. But yeah, it’s really cool to see all of us doing well.”

With Gauff and Iva Jović now in the quarterfinals, there are Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys, who will be facing each other in the fourth round, meaning one of them will definitely move on to the quarterfinals as well. According to PFSN’s exclusive interactive simulator, fourth seed Amanda Anisimova has an 82% chance to beat her fourth-round opponent, Wang Xinyu, which would make four Americans in the quarterfinals.

Gauff made it clear how much that would mean saying, “But yeah, it’s really cool to see all of us doing well, and I think yeah, for sure I think Jess and Madi play so they’ll be for sure one, and hopefully Amanda can win, and we can keep this up.”

Gauff’s Interesting Record After Beating Muchová in a Tournament

There’s something interesting about Gauff’s head-to-head record against Muchová. She’s never lost to her in five meetings, and here’s the thing that’s really remarkable: every single tournament where Gauff has beaten Muchová, Gauff has gone on to win the whole thing. At the 2023 Cincinnati Open, Gauff defeated Muchová 6-3, 6-4 in the final and won the title.

Later that same year at the US Open, Gauff beat Muchová 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals and then defeated Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to win her first Grand Slam title.

Then, in 2024 at the Beijing Open and at the 2025 United Cup, Gauff beat Muchová both times and won those tournaments as well. So the pattern is clear: Gauff beats Muchová, then goes on to win the event. She’s looking for her first title here at Melbourne Park, and this fact only makes it better for her and American women’s tennis.

Her next opponent will be the 12th seed, Elina Svitolina, with the American having a 67% chance of advancing to the semifinals.
