Madison Keys Makes Her Feelings Known on Facing Jessica Pegula in Australian Open 4R

Her path ahead, however, presents a unique challenge as she prepares to face fellow American and close friend Jessica Pegula.

Following her match Saturday, Keys had an on-court interview that quickly shifted her focus to the upcoming fourth-round matchup. When the interviewer asked about the upcoming match against Pegula, referring to their “The Player’s Box” podcast, Keys opened up candidly about the complexity of facing her friend in competition.

Keys offered her perspective on what makes Pegula such a formidable opponent. “It’s going to be a tough match. Jess is such a great player. She’s always so consistently doing well every single week that she plays. So, she’s such a competitor. She is in every single match. She’s just so gritty. So, it’s always going to be a really tough match,” Keys explained during the interview.

Her assessment reflected genuine respect for Pegula’s relentless consistency and competitive mentality.

What distinguishes this matchup from typical rivalries is the off-court dimension created by their friendship and their work together.

Acknowledging this unusual dynamic, Keys revealed a practical concern, saying, “It also makes it hard, being friends, and we’re going to have to I think we have to film a podcast before we play a match. So, we’ll see how that goes,” she said about how they would navigate this unprecedented situation.

The American players have built considerable chemistry off the court, hosting “The Player’s Box” podcast alongside Jennifer Brady and Desirae Krawczyk and gaining massive support from the tennis world.

Pegula and Keys Set for High-Intensity Matchup

The fourth-round contest between Keys and Pegula will mark their fourth career professional meeting, with Keys currently holding a 2-1 head-to-head advantage.

Their most recent match was at the Adelaide International final in January 2025, where Keys defeated top seed Pegula 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. Throughout that encounter, Keys demonstrated her characteristic power while managing a left leg injury that required a medical timeout during the second set.

Both players enter the fourth round having won all of their matches in straight sets throughout the tournament so far. Pegula advanced past Oksana Selekhmeteva with a clinical 6-3, 6-2 victory on Margaret Court Arena in just above an hour, continuing her defensive masterclass.

According to the PFSN’s exclusive interactive simulator, Pegula is the favorite, with a 61% chances of winning the match and advancing to the quarterfinals. Her deepest run in Melbourne was in 2023 when she reached the Semifinals, and she would be looking forward to at least equaling this feat or making it to the finals for the first time.
