Insider Calls Darian Mensah’s $10M Miami Move ‘Preposterous’ Amid Duke Contract Row

CFB insider reveals the truth behind Darian Mensah's reported $10 million Miami deal as legal complications with Duke loom.

Darian Mensah has become the center of a major college football controversy after he entered the transfer portal, leaving the Duke Blue Devils just after a season. This move came just hours before the portal deadline and less than a month after he had seemingly committed to returning to Duke.

The $10 Million Darian Mensah Report and Its Truth

The Miami Hurricanes have emerged as the frontrunner to land Mensah. Reports suggest an eye-popping desperation package to bring him after Mario Cristobal missed out on Sam Leavitt and Husan Longstreet. Both to Lane Kiffin’s LSU. And the result? Miami is to shell out a reported total of roughly $10 million.

However, Bruce Feldman of ‘The Athletic’ has debunked these reports. In the latest episode of “The Audible,” he revealed his conversation with Miami sources, which clarified that the $10M mark is far from reality. He said, “I mean, for today, so talking to some Miami sources. There were some numbers that can’t, that you know, again, it’s the internet and people flow, right?”

“You know, at one point, somebody had said, ‘Oh, it was going to be $10 million for,’ which sounded preposterous. You know Darian Mensah is a good quarterback. Darian Mensah is not like what Michael Vic was at Virginia Tech.”

Feldman later added, “From talking to some Miami sources, they did not think that was close to accurate, that it was way more than what could be in play here.”

Feldman also compared Mensah with Cam Ward. He was blunt with his assessment that Mensah wasn’t Ward. His production and efficiency drop significantly under heavy pass rush, along with mechanical flaws that lead to inconsistent accuracy, raising some eyebrows.

Whereas, the PFSN CFB QB Impact metrics assigned him a score of 88.2, as he secured a season rank of 11. The primary concern might be Mensah’s contract with Duke. In December 2025, Mensah signed a record-breaking deal to remain with the Blue Devils after leaving Tulane. Some cited he banked a 2-year $8 million contract to spurn the Green Wave.

Now, it seems he is about to do the same. But with a bigger paycheck this time. The Hurricanes not only have to buy out his contract but might also face pushback from the ACC. Not to mention a separate financial package for the QB. An Adidas deal is also on the table to facilitate the deal and take off the burden from Miami.

But if Cristobal can navigate the legal muddle, this would mark the third straight year Miami has landed a top-tier transfer quarterback, following Ward and Carson Beck.
