Frances Tiafoe Overcomes ‘Little Bloodbath’ in Australian Open 1R

Frances Tiafoe overcame Jason Kubler in straight sets but had to grind a little during his Australian Open first-round fixture.

Frances Tiafoe booked his place in the second round of the Australian Open with a 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2 win over Jason Kubler. This was the first time since 2021 that the American won his Australian Open first-round match in straight sets. Following the match, Tiafoe spoke about his match, calling a part of it a “bloodbath”.

Frances Tiafoe on His 1R Win at Australian Open 2026

Tiafoe, who is the 29th seed at the Australian Open, did not have the easiest of starts to the match as Kubler pushed the first set to a tiebreak. Both players exchanged breaks early in the second set before the American made a decisive break in the sixth game. However, he had to wait until his fifth set point to take a 2-0 sets lead in the match before dominating the final set.

Speaking in his post-match interview, Tiafoe praised Kubler and pointed out about the match’s difficulties during its first set and a half.

“Jason is a good player. Obviously, injuries have hindered him quite a lot but his ability is great. Obviously, he moves very well, has a really good backhand and can get into a great serving rhythm. First rounds are never easy so happy to get out of a little bloodbath there for the first set and a half and thanks guys, thanks for coming out. Hope you guys enjoyed it,” the 27-year-old said.

Tiafoe also heaped praise on Venus Williams, whose match would follow his fixture on the John Cain Arena, stating:

“45 years young, happy she gets to come out here. She deserves all the flowers, she is one of the best athletes in the world, not just women athletes, one of the best athletes of all time.”

Tiafoe’s first-round win sees him maintain his 100% win record over Kubler and he now has a 4-0 head-to-head lead. His first encounter against the Aussie came in the second round of the 2022 US Open, which he won 7-6(3), 7-5, 7-6(2). He then beat Kubler twice in 2023 before triumphing at this year’s Australian Open.

Tiafoe’s Australian Open 2R Opponent

After beating Kubler, Tiafoe will next take on World No. 68 Francisco Comesaña in the second round of the Australian Open. The Argentine won his first main-draw match at the Melbourne Major after beating American wildcard 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. This will be the very first encounter between the two, with their head-to-head currently locked at 0-0.

If Tiafoe comes out on top, he will reach the third round of the Australian Open for the third time in his career. The 27-year-old went that far in 2023 and his best result at the tournament came in 2019 when he reached the quarterfinals. If Comesaña wins, he will reach the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time till US Open 2024.
