Defending champion and second seed Madison Keys will take on Czech qualifier Tereza Valentová in the second round of the Adelaide international. Whoever out of the two comes out on top, will face eighth seed Victoria Mboko in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 event.
Keys entered Adelaide after a quarterfinal defeat at the hands of eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka in Brisbane. The American received a bye to the second round due to her seeding.
Like Keys, Valentová also started her season in Brisbane but she suffered an opening-round exit at the hands of Anna Kalinskaya. The teenager then entered the Adelaide International qualifiers and booked her place in the main draw after straight-set wins over Laquisa Khan and former World No. 2 Vera Zvonareva. Valentová faced Jeļena Ostapenko in the first round and led 7-5, 3-2 when the Latvian was forced to retire due to injury.

Keys vs. Valentová Head-to-Head
The head-to-head between the two is currently locked at 0-0 as they have not had any prior encounters so far on the WTA Tour.
Keys vs. Valentová Prediction
Keys will enter the match as the overwhelming favorite to win the match. The American did not have the best of numbers on her first serve, winning 111 out of 170 points (65.2%) and serving 15 aces. However, she has also produced 14 double faults.
The World No. 9 is among the most powerful hitters in the women’s game and will be eager to start dictating from the beginning. That said, the 31-year-old has to be careful not to overhit her shots and produce too many unforced errors.
Valentová’s first-serve numbers so far this season have been slightly better compared to those of Keys’, as she has won 82 out of 116 points (70.7%), amassing 16 aces. However, the teenager has also produced 18 double faults and cannot afford too many of those against her American opponent.
While Valentová will be high on confidence after dominating Ostapenko but given the ways Keys has started the season, the American has a very chance of coming out on top and reaching the quarterfinals at the Adelaide International.
Pick: Keys to win by 2-1.
