NFL World Stunned by Mike Tomlin’s Decision To Step Down As Steelers HC: ‘So Hard To Believe’

Mike Tomlin left the NFL World in complete shock with his decision to leave the Pittsburgh Steelers following their loss to the Texans.

Mike Tomlin has stepped down as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers less than 24 hours after their 30-6 Wild Card round defeat to the Houston Texans at Acrisure Stadium, an outcome that may also mark the end of Aaron Rodgers’ career.

Mike Tomlin Shocks everyone by Stepping Down As Steelers HC

According to breaking news from Adam Schefter, Tomlin ended his 19-year tenure with Pittsburgh after the Texans game. Fans chanted “Fire Tomlin” late in the game, but sources say the coach himself chose to step down.

The Steelers left the Wild Card with the frustration of being eliminated for the seventh consecutive time in the first round, equaling the longest losing streak in league history. The 30-6 loss on Monday Night Football also marked their fifth playoff defeat by double digits.

The NFL world was stunned by the Steelers’ first head coach change in 19 years. Andrew Siciliano noted only one AFC North coach now remains: “If I had told you that Zac Taylor would be the only coach left standing in the AFC North…” he wrote on X, describing the situation in the division.

Mary Kay Cabot noted a wave of NFL coaching changes not seen in years, highlighting John Harbaugh’s departure from the Ravens and the shifting division landscape.

“This is so hard to believe. Tomlin and Harbaugh in the same season. End of an era in the AFC North,” said the analyst.

Another notable reaction came from Field Yates, who highlighted the remarkable numbers Tomlin posted during his long tenure with the Steelers: 19 seasons, one Super Bowl, eight division titles, and no losing seasons, one of the NFL’s most remarkable coaching runs.

SNYtv reporter Connor Hughes reacted similarly. “Wow. The AFC North is going to look very different,” he wrote on X.

Tomlin Had Two Additional Years On His Contract With The Steelers

This decision comes as even more of a surprise considering that Tomlin, who still had two years left on his contract, said at a press conference following the defeat to the Texans that he was not in the right frame of mind to talk about the future.

According to Schefter’s information, by 2 p.m. (Eastern Time), Steelers players had been contacted and informed of his decision to step down. This sequence suggests Tomlin made his decision after his public remarks, with players notified the same day. As Pittsburgh begins searching for a fourth head coach since 1969, Tomlin will consider future NFL options, including other franchises or TV roles.

Since the Steelers still hold Tomlin’s rights, a team will have to pursue a trade to make him their head coach similar to what Denver Broncos did while hiring Sean Payton.
